The Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur-et-Saint-Ignace d'Aire-sur-la-Lys stands proudly in the heart of Aire-sur-la-Lys, a true testament to the grandeur of late Baroque architecture. The story of the Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur-et-Saint-Ignace begins in 1612 when the Jesuits established the Sainte-Marie College in Aire-sur-la-Lys. Although the college buildings were soon completed, the construction of the church was delayed due to financial constraints. It wasn't until the generous contributions from the Caverel family that the project gained momentum. The church, dedicated to Saint James the Greater and Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was built between 1682 and 1688 under the guidance of Brother Jean Bégrand, who made significant alterations to the original plans.
In 1763, the Jesuits were expelled, and during the French Revolution, the church was repurposed as a meeting hall. It suffered significant damage, losing much of its original furnishings. However, in 1846, it was restored to its religious function, and further restorations in 1853 brought new life to its interior.
The exterior of the Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur-et-Saint-Ignace is a striking example of Baroque architecture. Its imposing white stone facade, reaching a height of 33 meters, dominates the surrounding area. The design features three levels, with a large central window on the second level that floods the nave with light. Flanking the window are escutcheons bearing the Caverel family arms and significant dates.
Inside, the church follows the liturgical guidelines of the Council of Trent, emphasizing preaching and the Eucharist. The single nave stretches 58 meters, culminating in a circular apse. Two side chapels at the entrance to the chancel form a mini-transept, giving the church a Latin cross shape. The crypt beneath was originally intended for the burial of Jesuits from the college.
The interior decor and furnishings primarily date from the 1853 restoration, except for 14 gilded wooden panels originally commissioned for the nearby Collégiale Saint-Pierre. These panels, rediscovered in 1950, were restored and now reside temporarily in the church, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
Among the notable features are the baroque statues of the apostles Peter, John, James the Greater, and Ignatius of Loyola, adding a touch of historical mystery as their origins remain unknown.
