Stiftsmühle

Stiftsmühle Aurich

Stiftsmühle

The Stiftsmühle in Aurich, Lower Saxony, is a striking example of historical architecture and a beloved symbol of the region. This five-story Dutch gallery windmill, standing at an impressive height of almost 30 meters, invites visitors to explore its fascinating past and enduring presence. With its intricate design and historical significance, the Stiftsmühle is more than just a mill; it’s a journey into the heart of Ostfriesland's milling history.

The History of Stiftsmühle

The story of the Stiftsmühle begins in 1731 when the East Frisian Prince Georg Albrecht granted permission to construct a mill outside the then city limits of Aurich. Originally a simple earth mill, the site evolved dramatically over the decades. By 1855, the mill was acquired by Hermann H. Knoop, who recognized the need for modernization as the city expanded and trees began to obstruct the wind. Consequently, Knoop demolished the old structure and erected the current, much larger windmill in 1858.

This new mill was designed to accommodate advanced milling techniques, including a motor-driven roller mill, which allowed for the production of larger quantities of flour. Despite these innovations, financial difficulties led the Knoop family to cease operations around 1930. In 1932, the mill was purchased by the Sethestift, giving it the name Stiftsmühle. The mill narrowly escaped demolition and was leased to the Freimuth brothers, who continued operations until 1968.

Exploring the Stiftsmühle

Today, the Stiftsmühle serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history of windmills in East Frisia. The museum, established in 1977 by the Aurich Heimatverein, showcases the development and significance of windmills in the region. Spread across five floors, the exhibition includes original artifacts, models, and informative displays that illustrate the journey from grain to bread.

The fully functional milling equipment, including two fine milling paths, grinding paths, and roller mills, is a highlight for visitors. The museum also features a traditional East Frisian bakehouse with a peat-fired stone oven, adding an authentic touch to the experience.

The Architectural Marvel

The Stiftsmühle is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the 19th century. Constructed from approximately 200,000 bricks, the mill boasts a towering presence with its four jalousie blades spanning a diameter of 24 meters. The axle head reaches a height of 28.6 meters, making it one of the tallest windmills in East Frisia, second only to the windmill in Hage.

Visitors are often captivated by the mill's elegant design, which combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. The windmill's gallery offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, providing a perfect backdrop for photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Preserving a Legacy

The preservation of the Stiftsmühle is a testament to the dedication of the Aurich community. In the late 20th century, extensive renovations were undertaken to restore the mill to its former glory. The Heimatverein replaced the blades, wind rose, gallery, and thatched roof, ensuring that the mill remains a vibrant part of Aurich's cultural heritage.

In addition to its role as a museum, the Stiftsmühle hosts various events and educational programs, fostering a deeper understanding of the region's milling history. These initiatives have helped to cement the mill's status as a beloved landmark and a source of local pride.
