Gottesberg, officially known as Salvatorianerkloster Gottesberg, is a serene and spiritually enriching destination nestled on a hilltop in Bad Wurzach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The story of Gottesberg begins in 1704 when Count Ernst Jakob von Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach and his wife Anna Ludovica donated a benefice to the church on this picturesque hill. By 1709, with the bishop of Konstanz's blessing, a Holy Sepulchre Chapel, stairway, and hermitage were established. The chapel was dedicated to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14.
In 1712, a brotherhood named the Brotherhood of the Good Death was founded, drawing in 500 members by the same year. This spiritual community flourished, and in 1763, three brothers of the Tertiarier, a branch of the Paulaner order, settled on Gottesberg. These brothers, clad in black habits, were not only devoted to their spiritual duties but also skilled in crafts like wool spinning and weaving, which sustained their livelihood.
Gottesberg became a sanctuary for sacred relics over the years. In 1767, the brothers acquired the holy remains of Redemptus, Eutropia, and Reparatus, which still rest in the monastery church today. Additionally, a Holy Blood relic, believed to have belonged to Pope Innocent XII, was bequeathed to the monks by a pilgrim from Günzburg.
However, the monastery faced challenges during the secularization wave in 1806 when Prince Eberhard of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach dissolved the monastery. The buildings were claimed by the princely house, and the monks received a modest pension. The last Paulaner brother, Josef Hotz, passed away in 1835, marking the end of an era.
In 1912, Prince Georg of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach generously donated the church and brother house to the parish of Bad Wurzach. By 1921, the Salvatorian order was invited to Gottesberg, breathing new life into the monastery. Every year since 1928, the Holy Blood Festival, featuring a rider procession, has been celebrated on the second Friday of July, attracting thousands of faithful participants.
The monastery continues to serve the community with a small group of Salvatorian brothers who contribute to pastoral care in the surrounding parishes. In 2009, the Holy Blood procession saw an impressive turnout of 5,000 believers and 1,700 riders, a testament to the enduring spiritual significance of Gottesberg.
