The History of St. Peter and Paul Church

The roots of St. Peter and Paul Church stretch back to around 1258, marking the establishment of the parish. Over centuries, the church has been a silent witness to the town's evolving narrative. During the tumultuous times of the Thirty Years' War, the church was repeatedly plundered and suffered a devastating fire in 1636, which led to the collapse of its tower.

Reconstruction efforts began, and by 1676, the church had been restored, featuring a new tower and a rebuilt northern aisle. The addition of Baroque elements during this period added a touch of elegance to its architecture. However, by the late 19th century, the church was in a state of disrepair, prompting plans for a larger, more robust structure.

The Architectural Splendor

Between 1895 and 1896, under the expert guidance of Arnold Güldenpfennig, the current Neo-Gothic hall church was constructed using sandstone blocks. The design incorporated cross-gabled roofs, a spacious transept, and rectangular choir flank chapels. The western tower, adorned with a gallery and corner turrets, became a defining feature of the skyline.

Inside, the church boasts a light-filled interior, where ribbed vaults rest gracefully on round pillars. The stained glass windows, crafted between 1896 and 1898 by the Cologne-based Schneiders & Schmolz, add vibrant color and storytelling to the sacred space. The interior's artwork was further enriched in 1909 by Eduard Goldkuhle, whose designs were refreshed during the extensive renovations of 2008/09.

Exploring the Church's Treasures

The church's wooden furnishings, crafted by the Wiedenbrücker School, are a highlight for visitors. The Neo-Gothic altars, with their intricate carvings and spires, create a sense of reverence and awe. Most of these, except the Marian altar, were the work of Becker and Brockhinke, with Anton Mormann's reliefs and figures adding a touch of artistic finesse.

The high altar is particularly noteworthy, featuring folding panels that depict a Christ cycle, flanked by figures of saints such as Boniface, Elisabeth, and Liborius. The Marian altar, adorned with a crescent moon Madonna by Franz Georg Goldkuhle, invites contemplation and reflection.

A Journey Through Time

Among the church's historical artifacts is a 13th-century baptismal font from the predecessor church, shaped like a goblet with a base resembling an inverted cube capital. The terracotta Stations of the Cross, fired in 1867, offer a poignant depiction of Christ's passion.

The church's organ, initially installed in 1898 by Eggert from Paderborn, underwent restoration in 1989 to return it to its original sound. This instrument, with its mechanical slider chests and 31 registers, continues to fill the church with harmonious melodies.

The Bells of St. Peter and Paul

The church's bell tower has undergone significant changes over the years. Initially equipped with cast steel bells of moderate quality in 1946-47, a major upgrade occurred in 2020-21. This involved the replacement with five newly cast bronze bells and the addition of four used bronze bells from St. Johannes Baptist in Leopoldshöhe, enhancing both the technical and musical quality of the chimes.
