In the heart of Bautzen, a town renowned for its rich cultural tapestry in Saxony, Germany, stands the Serbski dom, also known locally as Haus der Sorben. The Historical Significance of Serbski dom

The roots of the Serbski dom stretch back to the mid-19th century, with the formation of the Sorbian cultural and scientific society Maćica Serbska in 1845. The society's co-founder, Jan Arnošt Smoler, was instrumental in bringing the vision of a dedicated Sorbian house to life. Smoler acquired a property on Lauengraben in 1873, which became the center of Sorbian cultural activities. However, the original building, known as the Wendische Haus, was tragically destroyed in April 1945 during the final days of World War II.

In the post-war period, the Sorbian community faced the challenge of rebuilding. The Bautzen city parliament allocated the site of the destroyed Lessing School at Postplatz for the construction of a new Sorbian house. The architectural design competition was won by the Dresden firm Högg & Rötschke, and the foundation stone was laid on August 24, 1947, amidst great fanfare and international solidarity, particularly from Slavic countries.

Reconstruction and Modern Era

The construction of the new Serbski dom was a monumental task, funded largely through donations from Sorbian communities and international supporters. Despite financial setbacks due to the currency reform in the Soviet occupation zone, the building was completed and inaugurated on July 8, 1956, during the 2nd Sorbian People's Meeting. This new edifice became a beacon of Sorbian culture and a symbol of renewal and hope.

Over the decades, the Serbski dom has undergone various renovations and modernizations. Significant interior refurbishments took place in 2012/2013, including the modernization of the main hall and the conversion of the former Café Bjesada into office spaces. These updates have ensured that the building remains a functional and modern space while preserving its historical essence.

Architectural Charm

The Serbski dom is an architectural gem, protected as a historical monument. The three-story building is distinguished by its three triangular gables adorned with intricate sandstone honeycomb patterns. The design is both symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing, with the first floor featuring a prominent emphasis on one side, while the upper floors maintain a balanced symmetry. The building's location on the northern side of Postplatz, flanked by Karl-Marx-Straße and Kurt-Pchalek-Straße, makes it a central and accessible landmark.

One notable feature is the sandstone sculpture Jugendbrigadierleiter on the gable side facing Kurt-Pchalek-Straße, commemorating the youth brigades that played a crucial role in the building's construction. This artistic element adds a layer of historical depth and community pride to the structure.

A Hub of Sorbian Culture

Today, the Serbski dom is the headquarters of the Domowina, the umbrella organization for Sorbian associations, and the Foundation for the Sorbian People. It also houses the Sorbian Cultural Information Center, the Sorabia Film Studio, and other cultural entities. These institutions work tirelessly to preserve and promote Sorbian language, culture, and heritage.

Until 2020, the building also hosted the Studio Bautzen of Sorbian Radio, part of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR). The studio's relocation to the nearby Postplatz 3 did not diminish the Serbski dom's role as a cultural beacon. The building's connection to broadcasting dates back to 1956, with significant advancements in studio technology over the years, enabling live broadcasts and independent Sorbian programming from Bautzen.
