Bingley St Ives

Bingley St Ives Bingley

Bingley St Ives

Nestled between the charming towns of Bingley and Harden in West Yorkshire, England, lies the enchanting Bingley St Ives Estate, a sprawling 550-acre country park that promises an idyllic escape into nature and history. With its rich heritage, scenic landscapes, and a plethora of activities, Bingley St Ives is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and families alike.

The Historical Tapestry of Bingley St Ives

Steeped in history, the St Ives Estate has roots that trace back to the neolithic or Bronze Age, as evidenced by the ancient artifacts discovered in the area. The land, once divided between the monks of Rievaulx Abbey and Drax Priory until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540, was subsequently purchased by Walter Paslew. Over the centuries, the estate passed through the hands of the Laycock and Milner families before being acquired by the Ferrands in 1635. The estate, originally known as Harden Grange, underwent a name change in 1858, intertwining its identity with the local St Ives name.

The Ferrand family played a significant role in shaping the estate, with William Busfeild Ferrand, a Member of Parliament and magistrate, leaving a lasting legacy. A granite obelisk near Lady Blantyre's Rock commemorates his illustrious career. The estate remained under the Ferrand family's ownership until it was purchased by Bingley Urban District Council in 1929.

Exploring the Estate

Today, Bingley St Ives is a vibrant country park, attracting approximately 300,000 visitors annually. The estate is home to a variety of clubs and organizations, including the Bingley St Ives Golf Club, the Sports Turf Research Institute, Bradford Independent Care Group, Bingley Angling Club, and Aire Valley Archers. This diverse range of activities ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the estate's highlights is Coppice Pond, a picturesque body of water originally constructed as a feed water supply for a fulling mill. Over time, the pond was landscaped by the Ferrands and became a popular spot for boating. Today, it is stocked with a variety of fish, making it a favorite destination for anglers. Birdwatchers can also enjoy the bird hide and duck feeding pier, while the nearby archery club adds a touch of adventure.

To the east of Coppice Pond lies the historic mill, one of the oldest buildings on the estate, dating back to the early 14th century. Although it has been modified over the centuries, the mill remains a testament to the estate's rich history. South of Coppice Pond, near Cuckoo Nest Cottages, visitors can find Baxter's Pond, which was restored in 2003 and is fed by both Coppice Pond and the mill.

St Ives Mansion and Surrounding Attractions

The St Ives Mansion House, a central feature of the estate, has undergone several transformations over the years. Once a nursing home for young disabled individuals, it has since been converted into apartments. The mansion's garden lawns feature the ornamental Round Pond, complete with a non-functioning fountain, adding a touch of elegance to the surroundings. The Round Pond feeds into the Upper Pond in Cuckoo Nest Wood, where water cascades down a millstone grit crag into a shallow pool, creating a serene and picturesque setting.

North of the mill, an indoor and outdoor equestrian riding center has been established, catering to both the disabled and the general public. Just east of the mansion house, families can enjoy the children's play area and nearby facilities. The main offices of the Sports Turf Research Institute are also located in this area, contributing to the estate's diverse range of activities.

Around the estate, visitors can explore a captivating sculpture trail featuring chainsaw carvings, particularly numerous in Bell Bank Wood near the east entrance car park. This car park provides ample space for 56 cars and four horse boxes, ensuring convenient access for visitors.

The Golf Club and Beyond

The Bingley St Ives Golf Club, established in 1931, is another prominent feature of the estate. Designed by the renowned Dr. Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones, the course initially featured nine holes but was extended to 18 in 1935. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a challenging and scenic round of golf amidst the estate's natural beauty.

In addition to its historical and recreational offerings, the estate boasts numerous listed buildings, each with its own unique story. The estate's diverse landscape, rich history, and wide range of activities make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring West Yorkshire.

Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll through picturesque woodlands, an adventurous day of archery or equestrian activities, or a relaxing round of golf, Bingley St Ives Estate offers an unforgettable experience for all. Immerse yourself in the beauty and history of this enchanting country park and create lasting memories amidst its serene and captivating surroundings.
