Thinktank Birmingham

Thinktank

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham, Thinktank is a captivating science museum that promises an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Opened in 2001, this modern marvel is part of the Birmingham Museums Trust and is located within the bustling Millennium Point complex on Curzon Street, Digbeth. Whether you're a science enthusiast, history buff, or simply looking for a fun day out with the family, Thinktank has something to offer everyone.

The History of Thinktank

The origins of the Thinktank can be traced back to the mid-19th century with the inception of the Birmingham Collection of Science & Industry. Initially, the collection consisted of weapons from the gun trade and the Birmingham Proof House. In 1885, the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery opened, incorporating these science collections. The Museum of Science and Industry was later established in 1951 at the Elkington Silver Electroplating Works on Newhall Street, showcasing artefacts related to local industry and the history of science and technology.

In 1995, Birmingham City Council seized an opportunity presented by the Millennium Commission to construct a new building for the museum. The former Museum of Science and Industry closed its doors in 1997, and on 29 September 2001, Thinktank was unveiled as part of the £114-million Millennium Point complex. This new chapter was marked by a significant upgrade in 2005, including the addition of a planetarium. By 2007, Thinktank had welcomed over 1 million visitors. In April 2012, the Birmingham Museums Trust assumed governance and management responsibilities for Thinktank, along with eight other sites.
