By the 13th century, during the turbulent times of the Hundred Years' War, the church was further fortified and expanded. The late 17th century saw the establishment of the Diocese of Blois, reducing the vast Diocese of Chartres. In 1697, the still incomplete church of Saint-Solenne was chosen as the cathedral for the new diocese. King Louis XIV, recognizing the significance of this new cathedral, generously funded its completion and gifted the magnificent high altar in 1698. The cathedral was officially consecrated on July 9, 1730, under the patronage of Saint Louis, King of France.

Revolutionary Changes

The French Revolution brought significant upheaval to religious institutions across France, and Blois Cathedral was no exception. Although it was spared demolition, the cathedral was repurposed as a Temple of Reason, and much of its interior furnishings were sold off. The cathedral's status was temporarily downgraded to a parish church until the restoration of the Diocese of Blois in 1823.

19th and 20th Century Restorations

The 19th century saw extensive restoration efforts, including the addition of a side chapel for the burial of bishops and the installation of new stained glass windows by the renowned artist Lucien-Léopold Lobin. The 20th century brought further changes, with the creation of modern stained glass windows by Dutch artist Jan Dibbets in the 1990s. These windows, which cover 33 bays and span over 360 square meters, blend contemporary artistry with deep Christian symbolism.
