The story of Heilig-Geist-Kirche begins in 1333 when the Heilig-Geist-Hospital was founded. By 1400, the construction of the church was completed, thanks to the approval granted by Bishop Heidenreich Wolf of Lüdinghausen in 1382. Originally, the church served as a chapel for the poor and sick residents of the hospital, a common practice in medieval Europe where over 350 such hospitals existed within the Holy Roman Empire.
Throughout the centuries, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche has seen its fair share of turmoil. Religious conflicts at the end of the 16th century left the altar and pulpit in a state of disrepair, reducing the church's religious activities to just one annual mass. Under the stewardship of Jodocus Hermann Nünning, the church underwent significant renovations in 1722 and 1723, restoring its former glory.
The Seven Years' War brought further challenges when the church was used as a magazine in 1762, and it was desecrated by Prussian troops in 1779. By 1809, the church had lost its sacred purpose altogether when the French repurposed it as a storage facility. For many years, the building served various secular functions, including housing firefighting equipment until 1945, earning it the local nickname Brandkiärke or Fire Church.
Tragedy struck again during the air raids of March 1945, which left the church in ruins, with only its outer walls remaining. However, the post-war years brought a renewed effort to preserve and restore the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. By 1948, restoration efforts were underway, and by 1952-1953, the church had been integrated into the new town hall complex, with its upper floor converted into a stylish meeting room for the town council and its ground floor housing a local museum until 1986.
The Heilig-Geist-Kirche is renowned for its stunning Gothic brick facade, a rarity in the Westmünsterland region. The north and south sides of the building feature elaborate gables adorned with blind arcades, arch friezes, and diamond patterns crafted from glazed bricks. This architectural style is reminiscent of the brick Gothic churches found in the Lübeck area, suggesting a possible influence from Johann Walling, who became the provost of Lübeck Cathedral in 1433.
One of the church's most notable features is the Johannesglocke or John's Bell, which has a storied history of its own. After the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, a new bell was cast in 1693 and hung in the tower in 1694. Despite being requisitioned for war purposes in 1941, the bell was spared from being melted down and was returned to the church in 1947. Today, it rings annually on St. John's Day (June 24th) at 1 PM, a tradition that continues to bring the community together.
In recent years, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche has been incorporated into the Forum Altes Rathaus Borken (FARB) project, a new cultural center funded by the North Rhine-Westphalia state structural program. This initiative aims to create a vibrant cultural space that includes the town museum and the tourist information center.
