The grand design of the current church was initiated in the early 18th century, attributed to the architect Giovanni Battista Scapitta. The church, completed in 1715, was a private place of worship for the nuns, known as the Nuns' Choir. The public-facing part of the church, consecrated in 1726, opens onto the Piazza Castello, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of the past.

The history of Santa Caterina is marked by significant events. Following the French occupation of Monferrato in 1796, the church's assets were confiscated, and the convent was transformed into the Imperial Lyceum by Napoleon's decree. During the Restoration period, King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia established the Royal College of Education, entrusting it to the Somaschi Fathers. The church and convent became known as the Royal College of Santa Caterina.
In 1866, a new decree led to the expulsion of the Somaschi Fathers, transforming the college into a secular institution named after its founder, Andrea Trevigi. It wasn't until 1931, after the Lateran Pacts, that the Somaschi Fathers resumed their activities at the College of Trevisio, officiating the church until 1973.
Today, Santa Caterina is under the care of the Internado Municipal de Trevisio. Although it was closed to the public in the 1990s due to maintenance challenges, the church has seen a revival thanks to the efforts of the Santa Caterina Onlus Association. Since 2010, the association has been dedicated to the church's upkeep, organizing initiatives to promote its cultural significance and raise funds for restoration.
