Parc Ribalta, known locally as Parque Ribalta, is a verdant oasis nestled in the heart of Castelló de la Plana, Spain. This lush urban park, with its rich history and beautiful landscapes, offers both locals and tourists a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to relax, Parc Ribalta is a must-visit destination.
The origins of Parc Ribalta date back to the 19th century, a period when Castelló de la Plana was undergoing significant industrialization. The park was established by the local council to impress train travelers with a display of the city's economic prowess. Interestingly, it was built on the site of the old Calvario cemetery and was dedicated to the Catalan painter Francesc Ribalta, who was mistakenly believed to have been born in Castelló. The park was later expanded in 1876 with land donated by the Count of Pestagua, initially named Parque de la Alameda and subsequently Parque del Obelisco.
Parc Ribalta is uniquely structured, featuring an elongated triangular shape that runs adjacent to the road to Morella. The design, crafted by Lluís Alfonso, consists of two interconnected triangles joined by a scenic walkway. Within the larger triangle lies La Pérgola, a multifunctional building that replaced the original structure, which included a pergola, a recreational house, and a pond.
The park is not just about its layout; it's a treasure trove of historical and artistic elements. One of the most notable features is the statue of Francesc Ribalta, erected in 1927, which stands proudly in the central roundabout of the park. Another significant monument is the Obelisk, originally constructed in 1897 to commemorate the city's resistance during the Carlist Wars. Although it was destroyed in 1938, it was reconstructed in 1980, preserving its historical significance.
Adjacent to Parc Ribalta is the Parc del Obelisco, also designed by Lluís Alfonso in collaboration with Salvador Fors and gardener Francesc Tirado. This section of the park is characterized by a diagonal cobblestone walkway leading to the old railway station. At the heart of this pathway is a large plaza where various paths converge, creating a network of charming trails known as maranyetes. These pathways are lined with lush greenery, offering a perfect setting for leisurely strolls and moments of reflection.
Parc Ribalta is home to several architectural and artistic marvels. The Templete de Música, a music pavilion built in 1934 by Francesc Maristany, is a standout feature. This structure, supported by 16 paired Corinthian columns, boasts a half-orange dome that adds to its architectural charm. Another interesting structure is the Palomar, a large tower situated within the maranyetes, adding a touch of historical intrigue to the park.
The park also features beautifully crafted ceramic benches, which are perfect for resting and soaking in the serene surroundings. Additionally, various busts and statues are scattered throughout the park, honoring prominent figures from Castelló's history. Noteworthy among these are the bronze busts of Tárrega by Adsuara and Vicente Castell by Octavio Vicent, as well as the monument to Domingo Herrero by Tomás Colón Bauzano near the pond.
Parc Ribalta is more than just a park; it's a hub of cultural and social activities. Until 2009, it was the venue for the Encensa de gaiates (lighting of the gaiatas) during the Magdalena festival. Although this event has since moved to Avenida del Rey, the park continues to play a vital role in the city's cultural landscape.
In recent years, the park has undergone modifications to accommodate the TRAM, Castelló's electric bus system. This project aims to create a concrete and cobblestone platform that traverses the park, integrating it into the city's public transportation network. Despite some opposition from heritage conservation groups, the project promises to enhance the park's accessibility and functionality.
Parc Ribalta is a testament to Castelló de la Plana's rich history and cultural heritage. Its blend of natural beauty, historical monuments, and modern amenities makes it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages. Whether you're exploring its scenic pathways, admiring its architectural marvels, or simply enjoying a moment of tranquility, Parc Ribalta offers a unique and enriching experience in the heart of the city.
