However, it was the end of the 15th century that marked the beginning of the construction of the current basilica. Cardinal Guillaume Briçonnet initiated the rebuilding process in 1498, aiming to accommodate the growing population and their spiritual needs.

The construction of the basilica was a gradual process, with significant milestones along the way. The left radiating chapel was completed in 1500, followed by the axial chapel and the right radiating chapel in 1503. By 1520, the choir and the right arm of the transept were in place, and the left arm of the transept followed in 1524. The crossing of the transept was finished in 1534. The western tower, a prominent feature of the basilica, was constructed between 1597 and 1610, with the vaults of the nave completed in stages by 1682.

Throughout its history, Notre-Dame d’Espérance has witnessed significant events, including the temporary elevation to cathedral status for a royal wedding in 1570 and the destruction caused by lightning, sieges, and wars. The basilica was designated a minor basilica in 1946, a recognition of its importance and heritage.

Dürrbach’s work, inspired by a poem invoking Notre-Dame d’Espérance and the Black Madonna, is considered his masterpiece.
