Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Chaumont

Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Chaumont Chaumont

Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Chaumont

Situated in the heart of Chaumont, France, the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Chaumont, or the Museum of Art and History of Chaumont, is a treasure trove of regional archaeology, fine arts, and 19th-century glove-making craftsmanship. This remarkable museum, labeled as a Musée de France, has been housed since 1965 in the imposing 19-meter donjon, which served as a prison until 1886. The museum occupies seven of the lower rooms of the former palace of the Counts of Champagne, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Castle

The origins of the castle are deeply entwined with the history of the Counts of Chaumont in the 10th century. It later passed to the House of Champagne when Milon, in 1187, mortgaged part of his estate to finance his departure on a crusade. By 1202, the castle was part of the County of Champagne. In 1255, it became the seat of a bailiwick and was incorporated into the royal domain. The town fortified itself with a moat and continuous walls around 1300, and these fortifications were further strengthened in the 14th century under the House of Joinville. In 1467, Jean II of Lorraine made repairs to the castle, including the pont mort and the great hall.

The city's defenses, and consequently the castle's, were regularly updated under various rulers including Charles VIII, Francis I, and Henry of Lorraine. Between 1577 and 1580, a bastion was added to the castle, and by 1593, it had undergone significant fortification. From the great hall, visitors can see two windows from the 13th century, and the Romanesque donjon, classified as a historical monument, stands at an impressive 22 meters high with walls 2.6 meters thick.

Collections

The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Chaumont places a significant emphasis on sculpture. One of the museum's rooms is dedicated to the works of Jean-Baptiste and Edme Bouchardon, two prominent sculptors. The museum's archaeological collection includes a cuirass dating from the late 9th century BCE, sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, a regional altarpiece, the effigy of John the Blind, and remnants of the tomb of Claude de Lorraine. Due to the limited space and the abundance of collections in storage, the paintings are displayed on a rotational basis.

Fine Arts

The fine arts section of the museum boasts an impressive array of works. Notable pieces include a still life with musical instruments attributed to Bartolomeo Bettera, The Death of Adonis by Félix Boisselier (exhibited at the Salon of 1812), and A Drinker, attributed to Josse van Craesbeeck, which was part of the Louis La Caze collection. Other highlights include The Construction of the Tower of Babel (1690) by Charles Gussin, View of the Castle Bridge of Saint Maurice in the Valais, Moonlight Effect by François Alexandre Pernot, bas-reliefs from Claude de Lorraine's funerary chapel by Domenico del Barbieri, and a hunting scene by Paul de Vos.

Craftsmanship

One of the museum's rooms is dedicated to the glove-making industry, which was a prosperous trade in Chaumont during the 19th century. This exhibit provides a fascinating look into the craftsmanship and economic history of the region.
