The History of Santi Pietro e Paolo

The story of Santi Pietro e Paolo begins in 1386, when a local benefactor named Pietro Mazzagallo left a will requesting the construction of a church. His testament, partially inscribed on the church's entrance architrave, also stipulated that daily masses be held for the repose of his soul and those of his relatives. The church was completed between 1431 and 1432, marking the beginning of its long and varied history.

Throughout the 16th century, the church served as a temporary home for the Confraternity of the Battuti della S.S. Trinità before they moved to the Church of the Holy Trinity near the Palazzo Pretorio. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Santi Pietro e Paolo became a singing school and later a provisional residence for priests of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri until their church on Riva Vena was completed.

The fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 brought significant changes to the church. It was confiscated by the occupying French and Austrian forces and repurposed as a School for Gunners. A cannon on a cart was placed inside, and the building was even used as a stable for horses. To accommodate these new functions, the entrance was widened, and two windows were added to the façade.

In the early 20th century, the church was purchased by the Municipality of Chioggia from the Military Engineering Department. In 1921, thanks to the efforts of local historian Aristide Naccari, the façade was restored to its former glory. In 1941, following an exchange with the Church of San Nicolò, which became municipal property, San Pieretto was transferred to the ownership of the Cathedral Chapter.

The most recent restoration, carried out between 2011 and 2013, led to the church being dedicated to the adoration of the Crucifix by Bishop Adriano Tessarollo.

Exploring Santi Pietro e Paolo

As you approach the Santi Pietro e Paolo Church, you are greeted by its unique façade, which is the only part of the exterior visible due to the buildings that have sprung up around it over the centuries. The façade features a semicircular crowning and is divided into three vertical sections, each capped by pointed arches. A small rose window sits at the center, adding a touch of elegance to the otherwise austere brickwork.

The entrance portal, made of Carrara marble, bears the inscription detailing the church's origins and the coats of arms of the Mazzagallo family and the city of Chioggia. Above the portal, a bas-relief depicts Saints Peter and Paul, the church's namesakes, welcoming visitors with a sense of solemnity and grace.

The Interior of Santi Pietro e Paolo

Stepping inside, the church's rectangular layout becomes apparent. Measuring 7 meters in width, 15 meters in length, and reaching a height of 12 meters at the semicircular dome, the interior is both intimate and grand. A large arch divides the choir area from the rest of the church, supported by marble capitals adorned with intricate leaf motifs.

The altar is a striking feature, consisting of a medieval wellhead previously housed in the Seminary, topped by a glass mensa. On the right wall of the choir, a 17th-century Carrara marble tabernacle is decorated with cherubs and passion instruments in relief, set against a frescoed marble background. Suspended from the ceiling is a 17th-century crucifix, measuring 3.5 by 2.3 meters, which adds a profound sense of spirituality to the space.
