Initially, plans included two towers for the main facade, but only the northwest tower was constructed between 1511 and 1543. This tower was later destroyed by fire in 1697 and rebuilt in a Baroque style in 1744, only to be demolished again after an earthquake in 1763. The current neo-Gothic tower, which stands as the second tallest church tower in Romania, was constructed between 1837 and 1860.
