Saints Rocco and Domenico's church

Saints Rocco and Domenico's Church, locally known as Chiesa dei Santi Rocco e Domenico, is a captivating historical gem nestled in the heart of Conegliano, Italy. This charming church, with its unique blend of architectural styles, stands as a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.

The History of Saints Rocco and Domenico's Church

Constructed in the 17th century, Saints Rocco and Domenico's Church was built by the community of Conegliano as an ex-voto following the devastating plague of the 1630s. This Baroque structure was originally part of a larger convent complex for Dominican nuns, which remained active until the early 19th century. Although the convent was suppressed during the Napoleonic era, the church endured, and today only the guest quarters of the convent survive.

The church's historical roots run deep, with an earlier votive chapel dedicated to Saint Rocco dating back to the 15th century. This chapel was annexed to the church of the San Francesco convent, reflecting a longstanding devotion that continued to evolve over the centuries.

Exploring the Exterior

The exterior of Saints Rocco and Domenico's Church is a fascinating amalgamation of styles from various periods. The current façade, a 20th-century creation by architect Vincenzo Rinaldo, showcases a tripartite design with neoclassical elements. Ionic pilasters divide the façade into three sections, culminating in a spacious pediment adorned with bas-reliefs. A central rose window is elegantly framed within a square, flanked by two arched windows.

Visitors enter through a portico supported by rounded arches, with the central arch embellished by a tympanum and Ionic columns. While the left side of the church is adjacent to another building, the right side remains visible, contrasting starkly with the ornate façade due to its plain and unadorned appearance. Behind the church, a modest bell tower rises, notable for its bifora windows and crowned top, though it lacks a clock.

Discovering the Interior

Inside, the church features a single nave, reflecting the composite style influenced by various historical periods. While it may not house works of significant historical importance, several pieces are noteworthy. The most prominent is The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine, a grand altarpiece by Francesco Beccaruzzi. Additionally, the ceiling fresco Apotheosis of Saints Rocco and Domenico (1827) by Giovanni De Min is a highlight, showcasing the talent of the artist who later decorated the interiors of Villa Gera.

The Organs

The church's musical heritage is preserved in its pipe organ, situated on the counter-façade gallery. Originally crafted in 1851 by Giovan Battista De Lorenzi, the organ has undergone various modifications by Rodolfo Guerrini in 1930, Alfredo Piccinelli in 1975, and Luciano Stradiotto in 1994. With electric transmission, the organ boasts 23 registers and two consoles, each with two keyboards and a pedalboard. In 2019, a temporary positive organ by Verschueren was installed, featuring two keyboards and a pedalboard.
