One of the highlights is the only surviving Advanced Passenger Train (APT-P), a marvel of British engineering from the 1970s and 1980s. Crewe North Junction, built in 1939, was designed to withstand the Luftwaffe bombs of World War II, with its concrete construction and thick walls and roof. This signal box offers an excellent vantage point for viewing passing mainline trains and features demonstrations linked to a simulator. Exeter West, originally used to control the split at Exeter between the Great Western Railway and the Southern Railway, boasts 131 levers and was operated by only the best signalmen. Volunteers now operate Exeter West on weekends, using a demonstration 1960s timetable that includes famous expresses such as the Torbay Express and the Cornishman.
