Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still Museum Denver

Clyfford Still Museum

In the heart of Denver, Colorado, lies a cultural gem dedicated to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, the Clyfford Still Museum. This unique institution offers a deep dive into the life and work of abstract expressionist Clyfford Still, whose revolutionary approach to art left an indelible mark on the art world. The museum, with its sleek modern architecture and thoughtfully curated exhibits, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

The Birth of a Unique Institution

The Clyfford Still Museum's story began with the artist's passing in 1980. In his will, Still stipulated that his entire collection be given to an American city willing to establish a museum solely dedicated to his work. This generous yet demanding bequest sparked a competition among several cities, each vying for the honor. Ultimately, Denver was chosen in 2004, thanks to the efforts of then-Mayor John Hickenlooper and the artist's widow, Patricia Still.

The museum officially opened its doors in 2011, housed in a 28,500-square-foot building designed by Allied Works Architecture. The structure itself is a work of art, with its minimalist design and attention to natural light creating an ideal environment for showcasing Still's masterpieces. The building features nine galleries, an art studio, visible painting storage areas, a conservation lab, two outdoor terraces, and an outdoor forecourt green space, all designed to enhance the visitor experience.

A Glimpse into Clyfford Still's World

The museum's collection is nothing short of extraordinary, encompassing 3,125 works that represent 93 percent of Still's lifetime output. This includes 130 paintings from 1920-1943, showcasing his early student years and first ventures into abstraction. Visitors can trace the evolution of Still's style through 302 paintings from 1944-1960, considered his breakthrough period and the height of Abstract Expressionism. The collection also features 350 paintings from the final two decades of his life, created in rural Maryland, offering a comprehensive view of his artistic journey.

In addition to the paintings, the museum houses 2,300 works on paper, including drawings, limited-edition fine-art prints, and pieces in various media such as pastel, crayon, charcoal, gouache, tempera, graphite, and pen and ink. These works provide a deeper understanding of Still's creative process and his exploration of different techniques and materials. The collection is rounded out by three carved wood and mixed media sculptures, adding another dimension to the artist's oeuvre.

Immersive Exhibitions and Rotating Displays

The Clyfford Still Museum is committed to keeping the experience fresh and engaging for visitors. The museum rotates its collection two to three times per year, presenting themed exhibitions that offer new perspectives on Still's work. The inaugural exhibition set the tone for the museum's approach, and subsequent exhibitions have included the Artists Select series, curated by renowned artists such as Roni Horn, Julian Schnabel, and Mark Bradford. Other notable exhibitions include Daughter's Eye/A Daughter's Voice, curated by Still's daughter Sandra Still Campbell, and Repeat/Recreate, which featured works from prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The museum also participates in loan programs, sharing Still's works with other institutions for special exhibitions. This not only broadens the reach of Still's art but also fosters collaboration and dialogue within the art community.

Delving into the Archives

One of the museum's most valuable resources is the Clyfford Still Archives, which houses a comprehensive collection of the artist's correspondence, sketchbooks, journals, notebooks, library, photo albums, and personal effects. These materials provide a fascinating glimpse into Still's life, his relationships with other influential figures of the Abstract Expressionist era, and his thoughts and philosophies on art. The archives are open to the public, offering researchers and enthusiasts a wealth of information to explore.

In 2017, the museum launched the Online Collection and Research database, making more than 2,500 works of art available in high-resolution reproductions. This digital resource has expanded access to Still's work, allowing people from around the world to study and appreciate his contributions to the art world.

A Visit to Remember

A trip to the Clyfford Still Museum is more than just a visit to an art gallery; it's an immersive experience that offers a deep connection to one of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism. The museum's thoughtful design, extensive collection, and commitment to education and preservation make it a standout destination in Denver's vibrant cultural landscape. Whether you're an art aficionado or simply curious about Still's work, the Clyfford Still Museum promises an enriching and inspiring journey through the life and legacy of a true artistic visionary.
