In the 1870s, Mayor Leopold Heldmann commissioned Wilhelm von Meien to find a suitable location for a war memorial dedicated to those who fell in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. Initially planned for a different site, von Meien chose this emerging district, known as auf dem Bruche, for the monument.
