The History of St. Nikolaus Church

The story of St. Nikolaus Church begins with a vision to create more intimate and accessible parish communities. This vision was championed by Bishop Michael Keller of Münster and warmly embraced by Propst Westhoff, the then-pastor of St. Agatha. In 1959, the St. Nikolaus Church Building Association was formed, rallying the community to fund the construction through generous donations and tireless fundraising efforts.

The first significant milestone came on December 6, 1962, when the groundbreaking ceremony was quietly held. The following year, on June 6, 1963, the foundation stone was laid with great fanfare, with General Vicar Laurenz Böggering officiating the ceremony. A lead capsule containing a document was embedded within the cornerstone, marking the beginning of this sacred edifice.

On May 3, 1964, the church was officially consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg, and the community gathered for their first solemn high mass in the newly completed church. The church's first pastor, Hubert Wernsmann, was installed on the first Sunday of September in 1964, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the parish.

In 2009, the parish of St. Nikolaus was dissolved and merged with St. Agatha, St. Johannes, and Holy Cross to form the new parish of St. Agatha. Despite this administrative change, the spirit and activities of the St. Nikolaus community continue to thrive.

Architectural Highlights

The architectural design of St. Nikolaus Church is a testament to modernist principles, featuring a unique pentagonal layout oriented towards the east. The main sanctuary, with its soaring ceilings, is encircled by a ground-level ring housing the entrances and ancillary rooms. This design creates an inviting and inclusive atmosphere for worshippers.

The freestanding bell tower, also pentagonal, is a striking feature of the church. Supported by two solid walls and a pillar at the pentagon's peak, the bell tower houses the bells and is crowned by a prominent spire topped with a ship, symbolizing St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors.

Inside the main worship space, the congregation is drawn towards the altar, which is accentuated by a parabolic wall and a folded ceiling structure, creating a focal point for the liturgical celebrations. The continuous upper window band allows natural light to flood the space, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the church.

Beneath the organ gallery, two steps down and aligned with the altar, lies the baptismal font, symbolically emphasizing the sacrament of baptism as the entry into the community of believers.

The church's organ, built in 1998 by Franz Breil, a renowned organ builder from Dorsten, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. This instrument features 24 stops across two manuals and a pedalboard, with mechanical action for both playing and registration. The organ's tonal palette and responsive action make it a vital element of the church's musical life, enriching worship services and concerts alike.

Community Activities

St. Nikolaus Church is not just a place of worship but also a hub of community activities that foster fellowship and engagement. One of the highlights of the year is the annual community festival, held in collaboration with the neighboring Protestant community since 1979. This event brings together people of all ages for a day of celebration, games, and camaraderie.

Another cherished tradition is the bicycle pilgrimage to Annaberg in Haltern, held on Ascension Day in partnership with the parish of St. Josef. This event, which began in 1986, combines physical activity with spiritual reflection, creating a memorable experience for participants.

For the younger members of the community, the annual summer camp to the Dutch island of Ameland has been a beloved tradition since 1990. Each year, around 65 children, accompanied by 16 supervisors and a kitchen team, embark on this adventure, creating lasting memories and friendships. In recent years, youth retreats have also been organized, offering opportunities for older children to explore new destinations and engage in meaningful activities.
