In the heart of Duisburg, nestled among the bustling cityscape, stands the remarkable Liebfrauenkirche, a beacon of architectural innovation and cultural transformation. This church, now known as the Kulturkirche Liebfrauen, has seamlessly transitioned from a place of worship to a vibrant cultural hub, captivating visitors with its intriguing history and modern-day allure.
The Liebfrauenkirche's story is one of resilience and reinvention. Originally, it was the successor to a neo-Gothic church built in 1896, which was largely destroyed during World War II. The current structure was constructed between 1958 and 1961, designed by architect Toni Hermanns, and stands proudly at König-Heinrich-Platz. The church is a testament to post-war modernism, with its unique use of materials such as concrete, natural stone, and glass.
In 2010, the church was deconsecrated, marking the end of its role as a parish church. However, this was not the end of its story. Thanks to the efforts of the Stiftung Brennender Dornbusch foundation, the church was preserved and repurposed, becoming a cultural venue that continues to enrich the community.
From 2011 to 2013, the Liebfrauenkirche underwent a significant transformation, evolving into a versatile cultural and event center. The upper level now features a spacious hall with flexible seating arrangements, capable of hosting up to 350 guests. The lower level provides a more intimate setting for smaller gatherings and exhibitions, accommodating up to 150 people.
The foundation's vision was to offer this space to artists, cultural organizations, and community groups, creating a vibrant hub for cultural exchange. This initiative has been a resounding success, with the number of events increasing from 14 in 2014 to 48 in 2022, attracting approximately 33,000 visitors by 2023.

The architectural design of the Liebfrauenkirche is a masterpiece of post-war modernism. Its double-story structure, crafted from steel and concrete, is a striking example of the era's architectural style. The building's façade features a stunning relief of Moses and the burning bush, created by sculptor Karl Heinz Türk in 1965, which lends the church its symbolic name.
Inside, the church is adorned with artistic elements that enhance its visual appeal. The glass art walls and altar ensemble, originally from the Vatican Pavilion of the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, add a touch of historical significance. The hall is illuminated by translucent, pleated walls made of glass-fiber-reinforced Plexiglas, casting varying shades of light depending on the time of day and weather conditions.
Today, the Kulturkirche Liebfrauen is a bustling center for a wide range of cultural activities. From concerts and art exhibitions to performances and workshops, the venue hosts an array of events that cater to diverse interests. It serves as a platform for both amateur and professional artists, fostering a vibrant cultural scene in Duisburg.
The church also accommodates social and political discussions, weddings, memorial services, and other community gatherings, making it a versatile space that meets the needs of the local community. Its role as a cultural venue is a testament to the power of community engagement and the importance of preserving historical structures for contemporary use.
The Liebfrauenkirche is home to a remarkable organ, built in 1964 by the renowned organ builder Franz Breil. This neo-baroque instrument, with its 42 registers and four manuals, is a significant element of the church's musical offerings. Although it is currently only partially functional, plans for its restoration are underway, ensuring that it will continue to be a key feature of the church's cultural activities.
Recognized as a significant architectural and cultural landmark, the Liebfrauenkirche was designated a protected monument in 2005. In 2018, it was celebrated as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, highlighting its importance as a Big Beautiful Building and a key site on the Route of Industrial Heritage.
Visiting the Liebfrauenkirche offers a unique opportunity to explore a space where history, architecture, and culture converge. Whether you are drawn by its architectural beauty, its rich history, or its vibrant cultural offerings, the Liebfrauenkirche is a must-visit destination that promises to leave a lasting impression.
