The chapel was linked to the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, an evangelical Calvinist denomination founded by Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon. The foundation stone was laid on July 2, 1810, by the sons of John Burt, a wealthy merchant from Forest Row who provided the funds for its construction. The chapel was officially opened on April 23, 1811, with a service led by the prominent preacher Rowland Hill.
West Street Baptist Church is a small yet dignified red-brick building, designed in the Classical style. The high-quality brickwork and restrained elegance of its façade have earned it a Grade II listing, recognizing its architectural and historical significance. The building features recessed semicircular arched windows, a pediment of brick, and a slate roof, all of which contribute to its timeless charm.
Over the years, the church has undergone several alterations and expansions to accommodate its growing congregation. In 1812, galleries were added inside the chapel to provide seating for an additional 200 worshippers. From its earliest days, West Street Baptist Church has played a central role in the life of the local community. In May 1811, just a month after the chapel's opening, a Sunday school was established, catering to more than 100 children. This number quickly grew, and by the following year, the Sunday school was serving over 400 children. The church's commitment to education and spiritual development has remained a cornerstone of its mission.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the church continued to adapt to the needs of its congregation. In 1824, members of Zion Chapel established a daughter church in nearby Turners Hill, which later became an independent Free Church. In 1847, a schism within the congregation led to the founding of a new Congregational church in East Grinstead, known as Rocks Chapel. Despite these changes, Zion Chapel remained a vital part of the town's religious landscape.
In the late 1960s, the church underwent a significant transformation, changing its name from Zion Chapel to West Street Evangelical Church in an effort to better engage with the local community. During this period, the congregation thrived, and the need for additional space led to the demolition of the adjoining derelict manse and the construction of a new two-story church hall.
However, the 1980s brought challenges as a disagreement arose between the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion and the local congregation over the denomination's Articles of Faith. This impasse ultimately led to the congregation leaving the chapel in 1981 and temporarily relocating to the Red Cross Hall. The schism resulted in the establishment of a new congregation, which eventually became known as Jubilee Community Church.
In 1980, the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion sold Zion Chapel, and the following year, members of the Providence Strict Baptist Chapel moved in. Under its new name, West Street Baptist Church, the building continues to serve as a place of worship for an evangelical Baptist congregation, maintaining its legacy as a center of faith and community in East Grinstead.
