The History of The Peoples Church

The story of The Peoples Church of East Lansing begins in 1907, originally established as the People's Congregational Church. At that time, it was the sole church in East Lansing, a town primarily known for housing the State Agricultural College of Michigan, which would later evolve into Michigan State University. In 1924, a bold decision was made to dissolve the original organization and reincorporate as The People's Church (Interdenominational). This transformation was a pioneering effort in creating one of the earliest interdenominational congregations in the United States, famously referred to as The Great Experiment by then-pastor Newell McCune.

By 1927, the congregation had completed the construction of their current church building at 200 W. Grand River Ave., strategically positioned on the border of the Michigan State College campus. This location symbolized the church’s mission to serve the students and faculty of the college. The church remained the only one in East Lansing until 1940, when St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church was established.

Architectural Splendor

The architecture of The Peoples Church is a striking example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical design. Its façade, adorned with intricate stonework and towering windows, exudes an aura of timeless elegance. The church’s bell tower, a prominent feature, suffered damage from a lightning strike in 1988 but was meticulously restored, adding to the building's historical narrative. The sanctuary, remodeled after a fire in 1965, now boasts a contemporary style with a stunning stained glass window above the Chancel, adding a splash of color and light to the serene interior.
