As the region extended from the Havel to the Oder, the settlement of Eversberg, later known as Eberswalde, began to flourish. The early settlers erected a church near the margravial castle, likely consecrated between 1241 and 1251. Although little is known about this initial structure, it is believed to have been a three-naved building.

The current Gothic church began to take shape in 1333. Over the centuries, it has undergone several significant transformations, particularly following the devastating city fire of 1499. In 1503, the church was extensively remodeled, and further alterations were made in 1726. The Reformation reached the region in 1539, and the first evangelical service was held here in 1542.

A notable historical event occurred in 1632 when the fallen Swedish King Gustav II Adolf was laid in state within the church. The 19th century brought a comprehensive renovation under the guidance of Hermann Blankenstein, who sought to restore the church's basilical character. The tower's completion followed a design by Friedrich August Stüler, and valuable terracotta reliefs from the church's early days were used to adorn the portal. The church's interior saw significant renovation in 1977, and the exterior was restored in 1993. Archaeological excavations in 2001 revealed a late medieval forge and the foundations of a 16th-century Latin school.

In December 2019, a smoldering fire caused by the heat from a lamp ignited the wooden railing on the south gallery of the choir. Though the fire was quickly extinguished, the subsequent cleanup lasted three months. During the restoration of the baroque altar, previously unknown vault paintings were discovered. The fire damage, estimated at 1.4 million euros, was covered by insurance, with additional plans to update the church's electrical system and other installations.

Architectural Marvels and Rich Interiors

This magnificent instrument, with its ebony and ivory keys, oak pedal, and intricate pipework, cost 1,900 thalers and contains 1,622 pipes. It was later refurbished in 1878 by Friedrich Kienscherf of Eberswalde, who constructed the organ case that remains today.
