Juan Antonio Vizarrón y Eguiarreta, a notable figure in the family, became the Archbishop of Mexico in 1730 and later the Viceroy of New Spain in 1734. The house gained further prestige when it hosted King Philip V and Queen Isabella Farnese during their visits to El Puerto de Santa María. This royal connection is commemorated by the iron chains hanging in the courtyard, giving the house its alternate name, Casa de las Cadenas.
The House of Vizarrón boasts a striking façade facing Plaza del Polvorista, composed of seven bays and two stories topped by a rooftop parapet. Flanking the entrance are sturdy Tuscan columns, elevated on a podium, which support an entablature crowned by a balcony.
On Calle de las Cadenas, two secondary entrances can be found. One is a simple, understated arch, while the other is more elaborate, featuring rustic pilasters atop slender pedestals, a lintel with splayed voussoirs, and a sculptural keystone. These entrances lead to the interior, where a spacious porticoed courtyard awaits, its arches resting on white marble Tuscan columns.
The courtyard is perhaps the most enchanting feature of the House of Vizarrón. Its gallery of semicircular arches is adorned with the characteristic hanging chains that lend the house its popular name.
