The History of the First Universalist Church

The roots of the First Universalist Church stretch back to 1866 when the Universalists of Elgin established their first church, Unity Hall, on this very site. This was the same year the National Watch Company factory was completed, marking the beginning of a shared history. Silvanus Wilcox, a church member, was instrumental in the construction of the factory, which soon became Elgin's largest employer.

By 1890, the congregation had grown, necessitating a larger building. George Hunter, a church member and one of the original founders of the factory, was tasked with designing the new structure. His vision was to create a church that mirrored a pocket watch, reflecting the town's watchmaking heritage. The body of the church represents the watch case, the roof the cover, the choir loft the hinge, and the tower the snap. The pulpit is strategically placed where the numeral XII would appear on a watch face.

Architectural Marvel

The First Universalist Church is a masterpiece of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Situated on a triangular lot at the intersection of Villa and Dupage Streets, its two-story masonry structure is distinctive with sixteen sides and a tented roof. The conical-roofed tower rises to match the height of the main body, creating a harmonious silhouette.

Entranceways with gabled roofs and pediments add to the building's charm, while the original stained glass windows cast colorful reflections inside. The church's stone base and water table, along with the wide arch windows flanked by pilasters, showcase the intricate design elements typical of the Romanesque style.

As the National Watch Company factory was demolished in 1966, the First Universalist Church became one of the few remaining links to Elgin's watchmaking legacy.
