Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains

Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains Enghien-les-Bains

Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains

Nestled in the charming town of Enghien-les-Bains, just north of Paris, the Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains stands as a beacon of historical and architectural allure. Known locally as église Saint-Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains, this remarkable church invites visitors to explore its rich history and stunning design, offering a serene escape from the bustling city life.

The History of Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains

The story of Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains begins in 1860, just a decade after Enghien-les-Bains was established as a commune. The church owes its existence to the generosity of Marie de Mora, widow of Joseph Moreno de Mora, and was crafted from the visionary plans of architect Auguste Delaporte. The initial construction featured only a nave with four bays, but the foresight of future expansion was already in place.

In 1866, the church underwent its first major enlargement under the guidance of Antoine Gaétan Guérinot. This expansion included the addition of two aisles and modifications to the bell tower, completed by the Pascal Franco company by 1868. The architectural innovation of using slender cast iron columns, reminiscent of designs by Louis-Auguste Boileau, added a unique touch to the structure.

Architectural Marvels

The Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains is celebrated for its striking romano-byzantine facade, a nod to the grandeur of Notre-Dame-la-Grande in Poitiers. This architectural style, combined with neo-gothic interior elements, creates a fascinating blend of historical influences. The facade features three tympanums and arcades housing statues of ten saints, creating a visually captivating entrance.

In 1927, the church saw further enhancements under architects Albert Morize, Jean Lacour, and René Boutin, who added two more bays and redesigned the portal and facade. The new bell tower, adorned with two turrets, adds to the church's nickname, the little Sacré-Cœur, reminiscent of the famous basilica in Montmartre.

The Splendor of Stained Glass

The stained glass windows of Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains are a highlight for visitors. The chancel windows, crafted by Claudius Lavergne, depict scenes from the life of Jesus, including the Nativity and the Flight into Egypt, flanked by images of King David and other biblical figures. Decorative windows by Antoine Lusson and later works by Gustave Pierre Dagrant further enhance the church's luminous beauty.

In the chapel housing the war memorial, a patriotic stained glass piece by L. Terrien commemorates historical events with vivid imagery, including Jeanne d'Arc and the soldiers of World War I, enveloped in the French flag.

Musical Heritage

Music lovers will appreciate the church's rich organ history. The original organ, crafted by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was later replaced by an instrument from Merkin and Company in 1901, placed on a new gallery above the entrance. After the church's expansion in 1934, Gutschenritter reinstalled the organ, which was further restored and enhanced by the Roethinger company in 1963 and Adrien Maciet in 1984.

A Community Landmark

Today, Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains is part of a parish network that includes nearby churches such as Saint-Ferdinand d'Argenteuil and the chapel of Saint-Paul. It remains a vibrant center for worship and community events, served by the priests of the Fraternité missionnaire pour la ville.

Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a tranquil place for reflection, the Église Saint Joseph d'Enghien-les-Bains offers an enriching experience. Its walls tell stories of faith, artistry, and community spirit, making it a must-visit destination in the picturesque town of Enghien-les-Bains.
