In the charming town of Erftstadt, nestled in the picturesque region of North Rhine-Westphalia, stands the Kirche der Versöhnung, a beacon of architectural innovation and historical significance. This evangelical church is more than just a place of worship; it is a symbol of resilience and community spirit that has shaped the town's identity over the decades.
The journey of the Kirche der Versöhnung began in 1958 with the formation of a church building association. The post-war era saw an influx of displaced people and refugees into the Rhineland, and the existing facilities in nearby Liblar were no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing number of evangelical Christians. By 1960, the community had expanded to 6,000 members, prompting the establishment of a new parish in Lechenich, with 3,200 members.
The architectural duo Anneliese Vossbeck-Krahwinkel and Ulrich Vossbeck were entrusted with the design and construction of the church and its associated community buildings. Construction commenced in 1965, and the church was officially consecrated on December 18, 1966. The church bells, crafted by the renowned Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock foundry, were blessed earlier that year on Reformation Day, October 31.
In 1969, the Lechenich congregation gained independence from Liblar, forming its own parish. This growth continued, leading to the establishment of additional community centers in Gymnich and Friesheim in the years that followed. Today, the Kirche der Versöhnung is part of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland's Cologne-South district, continuing its mission of faith and community service.
The Kirche der Versöhnung is a testament to modernist architecture, characterized by its U-shaped layout and minimalist design. The buildings are clad in red-brown clinker brick and topped with flat roofs, creating a harmonious blend with the surrounding landscape. The standout feature is the striking bell tower constructed from white concrete slabs, which dominates the skyline and serves as a focal point for the community.
The church itself is composed of several interlocking structures, largely devoid of windows, which lend an air of mystery and introspection. The entrance is located on the north side, leading visitors through a modest foyer into the main worship area, which is fully clad in clinker brick. The south side houses the choir and organ gallery, featuring vertical windows that allow light to filter through, illuminating the 1973 organ crafted by Willi Peter.
The altar area, positioned on the east side, is a prominent feature, elevated above the rest of the church and bathed in natural light from a windowed facade. This design choice creates a serene and contemplative atmosphere, inviting worshippers to reflect and find peace. Additional vertical windows are strategically placed at the junctions of the various structures, enhancing the play of light and shadow within the space.
