The History of St. Johannis Church

The story of St. Johannis begins around 1200, when the original church was first mentioned as a parish church. Situated on what is now Johannisplatz, the church faced numerous trials, including being set ablaze during the Saxon Brother War in 1450. Despite these challenges, it was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1488. However, the ravages of the Thirty Years' War saw it destroyed once more in 1639.

For centuries, St. Johannis served as the sole parish church in Gera, and its crypts were the resting place for the noble Reuss family. The great city fire of 1780 led to its final destruction, and despite various plans and attempts at reconstruction, financial constraints prevented its rebuilding. In 1824, the remnants were finally dismantled.

The present St. Johannis Church, dedicated to John the Evangelist, was built between 1880 and 1885, funded largely by public donations. The neo-Gothic masterpiece was designed by architects Constantin Lipsius and August Hartel, and it was consecrated on September 18, 1885. Located at the corner of Clara-Zetkin-Straße and Zabelstraße, this new church emerged during a period of rapid industrial growth in Gera, serving a burgeoning population of 30,000 residents.

Architectural Splendor

The neo-Gothic style of St. Johannis is characterized by its intricate brickwork and soaring spires. In 2010, three new bronze bells were commissioned and consecrated, each bearing inscriptions from the Gospel of John. In the autumn of 1989, St. Johannis became a center for the peaceful demonstrations that swept across East Germany, contributing to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. A linden tree and a commemorative stone, planted in front of the church, mark this period of transformation and hope.
