Saint John the Baptist church in Gniezno, known locally as Kościół św. Jana Chrzciciela w Gnieźnie, is a captivating gem of Gothic architecture nestled in the historic city of Gniezno, Poland. This remarkable church, with its rich history dating back to the 14th century, stands as a testament to the city's medieval past and its significance in Polish ecclesiastical history.
The origins of Saint John the Baptist church can be traced back to around 1179 when Przecław, a canon of Gniezno, invited the Order of the Holy Sepulchre from Miechów to establish themselves in the city. This order, known for its role in defending the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem during the Crusades, initially settled at the Church of the Holy Cross. In 1243, local rulers Przemysł I and Bolesław the Pious founded a church and monastery for the Order on the outskirts of Gniezno, near an existing hospital in the Grzybowo district.
The present brick structure of Saint John the Baptist church was erected in the mid-14th century, likely following the devastation of Gniezno by the Teutonic Knights in 1331. The previous church, situated outside the city’s defensive walls, may have been destroyed during this tumultuous period, necessitating the construction of the current building.
Saint John the Baptist church is an elongated, single-nave Gothic structure oriented eastwards. The presbytery, slightly older than the nave and dating from around the mid-14th century, features cross-vaulted ceilings divided by a simple profiled arch. The brick ribs of the vaults rest on pentagonal, pointed corbels made of artificial stone, adding to the church’s architectural elegance.
The presbytery originally had only three windows, but additional windows were added over the centuries, resulting in the current six-window configuration. Inside, the presbytery is adorned with priceless Gothic polychrome from the latter half of the 14th century. These frescoes, executed in the al secco technique on a thin lime wash, depict scenes from the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint John the Baptist, as well as figures of saints, kings, and prophets. The polychrome is characterized by its use of red and black colors to create intricate vegetal and geometric patterns that emphasize the architectural elements of the church.

ToursThe nave, constructed in the latter half of the 14th century, is slightly higher and wider than the presbytery and features a four-bay layout. The cross-vaulted ceilings are supported by richly decorated ribs and corbels, showcasing a variety of figural and animal motifs, such as a fox and geese, a pelican feeding its chicks, and masks surrounded by foliage. The vault keys are adorned with intricate canopies and floral designs, adding to the nave's visual splendor.
At the western end of the nave stands a four-story tower, completed in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tower’s Baroque copper helmet, added in 1666, is a notable feature, crowned with two lanterns. The tower’s base houses the sacristy, and its upper levels are punctuated by Gothic and round windows, as well as pointed-arch niches. The tower’s exterior is reinforced with stepped buttresses, and the entire church is topped with gabled roofs covered in Roman tiles.
Adjacent to the church is the former monastery, originally a free-standing Gothic structure built in the second half of the 13th century. Over the years, the monastery underwent numerous renovations and expansions, culminating in its current Baroque form in the latter half of the 18th century. During this period, a gallery was added, connecting the monastery to the church tower and giving the complex an L-shaped layout.
Following the dissolution of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in 1822, the Prussian authorities repurposed the monastery as a Christian school, a role it fulfilled until the late 20th century. Today, the building is privately owned, and recent restoration efforts have uncovered historic wooden ceilings dating from 1789. Plans are underway to adapt the monastery for public access, allowing visitors to appreciate its historical and architectural significance.
