Schwalbe-Arena

Schwalbe-Arena Gummersbach

Schwalbe-Arena

Nestled in the heart of Gummersbach, a charming town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the Schwalbe-Arena stands as a modern beacon of sportsmanship and community spirit. This multifunctional hall, inaugurated in the 2013/14 Handball-Bundesliga season, is the proud home of the VfL Gummersbach, a prestigious handball team with a rich legacy. But the Schwalbe-Arena is more than just a sports venue; it is a symbol of the town's dedication to innovation, sustainability, and engagement.

A Modern Marvel with a Rich History

The Schwalbe-Arena was constructed on the historical grounds of the former L. & C. Steinmüller plant, a nod to Gummersbach's industrial heritage. This state-of-the-art facility spans a gross floor area of 10,500 square meters, designed to cater to a variety of events beyond handball. The arena's connection to the adjacent Halle 32, a versatile event center, adds to its multifunctionality, providing ample space for business and VIP areas during games and events.

The arena's construction was a collaborative effort funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Gummersbach, VfL Gummersbach, and various businesses. The total cost of the project was approximately 10.4 million euros, with the city contributing the land valued at 290,000 euros. The project was brought to life by the architectural firm HPP (Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner GmbH + Co. KG) and HBM Stadien- und Sportstättenbau GmbH, following a Europe-wide tender process.

From Vision to Reality

The journey from concept to completion was marked by significant milestones. The groundbreaking ceremony on October 17, 2012, was attended by 140 guests, including handball legend Heiner Brand and the current VfL team. The first impression of the new arena was unveiled to fans and curious onlookers during an open house on May 22, 2013, where they could witness the installation of the arena's flooring.

The Schwalbe-Arena officially opened its doors with a thrilling handball match on August 24, 2013, where VfL Gummersbach faced TV Emsdetten. The match, which saw VfL Gummersbach triumph with a score of 27:23, was a fitting inauguration for the new home of the team.

Hosting Unforgettable Events

The Schwalbe-Arena is designed to accommodate up to 4,132 spectators for handball games, with 3,189 seats and over 800 standing places, along with eight luxury boxes. The arena's interior is equipped with movable telescopic stands, allowing for flexible configurations to host a variety of events, from sports to concerts and exhibitions.

One of the arena's most memorable events was its inaugural tournament held on August 9-10, 2013. This event featured teams such as VfL Gummersbach, TUSEM Essen, Montpellier AHB from France, and Union JURI Leoben from Austria. The tournament began with semifinal matches at the old Eugen-Haas-Halle, followed by a celebratory procession through the town to the new arena. The event concluded with VfL Gummersbach clinching the tournament victory in front of 2,900 enthusiastic fans.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Schwalbe-Arena is not only a hub for sports and entertainment but also a model of sustainability. The arena's energy needs are met through a local heating network powered by a woodchip heating system, and a photovoltaic system installed on the roof further supports its energy efficiency. These features underscore the town's commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation.

A Vibrant Community Hub

Beyond its role as a sports venue, the Schwalbe-Arena serves as a vibrant community hub. The adjacent Halle 32 offers additional space for events and gatherings, enhancing the arena's multifunctional appeal. The arena's location in the town center, with easy access to public transportation and ample parking provided by a nearby shopping center, makes it a convenient and attractive destination for visitors and residents alike.

Looking Forward

As the Schwalbe-Arena continues to host exciting handball matches and diverse events, it remains a testament to Gummersbach's forward-thinking spirit and dedication to community and sustainability. Whether you're a sports enthusiast, a concert-goer, or simply looking to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Gummersbach, the Schwalbe-Arena promises an unforgettable experience. Come and be part of the excitement, where history, innovation, and community converge in this remarkable venue.
