The Romans, starting from their base in Xanten on the Rhine, used the Lippe River as a transport route and established several camps along its banks, including the significant legionary camp in Haltern.

Under the supervision of archaeologist Friedrich Koepp, extensive excavations revealed the legionary camp later known as Römerlager Haltern. With support from Kaiser Wilhelm II, who donated 10,000 Reichsmarks, the first Roman-Germanic Museum was built in Haltern and opened in 1907.

The current Westfälisches Römermuseum Haltern, with its 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, was established in 1993 by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) on the site of the former Roman field camp. The exhibition attracted nearly 130,000 visitors and was later displayed in Berlin and Bremen.

Another remarkable exhibition, Luxury and Decadence, opened on August 16, 2007, and ran until November 25, 2007. It highlighted the opulent lifestyle of the Roman elite on the Gulf of Naples, featuring original artifacts from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples and Pompeii.
