The story of Sint-Jozefkerk begins in 1952, when the rapidly growing neighborhood of 't Eiland needed a spiritual and communal hub. The initiative was spearheaded by the dean of Kortrijk and Harelbeke's mayor, Gerard-Joseph Lanneau. They envisioned a new parish to cater to the influx of workers settling in the area. Charged with this mission, Chaplain Vyncke conducted the first mass on September 14, 1952, in the gymnasium of the boys' school, as there was no church building yet.

In 1954, the parish of Sint-Jozef-Arbeider was officially incorporated into the Diocese of Bruges, with Bishop Vandeberghe appointed as its first pastor. Despite his pivotal role in establishing the parish, Chaplain Vyncke did not become the pastor due to his young age, according to diocesan rules.

The Construction of the Church

As the parish grew, the gymnasium proved too small and inadequate for regular services. Initially, there was a proposal to relocate a wooden church from Olsene to 't Eiland, but the mayor dismissed this idea, fearing the structure would not last more than a year. Consequently, the decision was made to construct a new church.

Thanks to generous donations from parishioners, support from the Domus Dei organization, and assistance from the city, funds were raised for the project. Architect Vandenweghe, known for designing numerous homes in Harelbeke, was commissioned to create the church's design. Despite initial delays, progress was made in the spring of 1963, culminating in the laying of the first stone on May 18. The church was consecrated and opened for use on September 5, 1964. Interestingly, the construction of the adjacent rectory began earlier, in March 1952, but faced setbacks due to a water pipe issue, delaying its completion until 1963.
