In the heart of Hasselt, Belgium, stands a remarkable piece of history and architecture known as De Wijzer. This building, nestled at Kapelstraat 57, is a testament to the city's rich heritage and evolving urban landscape. The Historical Tapestry of De Wijzer

The origins of De Wijzer trace back to the 16th century, initially known as De Kleyne Weyser and De Groote Weyser. This historic building has seen numerous transformations, each layer adding to its rich tapestry. The first known owner was Lambert Smeets in 1704, but it was under Arnold Mathijs in 1727 that the building underwent a significant transformation. Mathijs replaced the original timber-framed facade with a classic brick frontage, aligning with the 18th-century trend of modernizing older structures with classicist elements.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the building served various roles, from a residential and commercial hub to a base for carriage rentals. Notably, it was owned by prominent figures such as former mayor Petrus Eyben and Catharina Stappers. By the late 19th century, it was bustling with the activity of carriage rental businesses under Jan and Jozef Libert & Grené.

Architectural Evolution

The architectural journey of De Wijzer is a fascinating blend of styles and functions. The building is a corner structure, characterized by its closed construction and a plot size of 130 square meters. The ground floor, constructed with brick, features modern hardstone arch windows, while the upper floor showcases an overhanging wooden structure supported by heavy modillons. This juxtaposition of materials and styles reflects the building's historical roots and its adaptation to contemporary needs.

The roof is adorned with a wrought iron pinnacle, approximately one meter high, which adds a decorative touch to the building's silhouette. Originally, a metal weather vane topped this pinnacle, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes.

From Past to Present

As the 20th century unfolded, De Wijzer continued to adapt. In the early 1900s, it was owned by carriage rental entrepreneur André (alias Henri) Grené. By 1935, it had transitioned into a garage for Cuypers, dealing in used cars. This period of change continued as the building became a shoe store and later, in 1936, was transformed into a painting contractor's business by Alfons Verjans.

Significant structural changes occurred in 1953 when the lower half of the building was demolished. However, the upper floor and roof retained their historical integrity. Further renovations in 1974 and 1993, led by architects Louis Van de Vondel and Jean-Pierre Verhelst respectively, modernized the ground floor facade and transformed the space into a boutique.

A Modern-Day Landmark

Today, De Wijzer stands as a vibrant part of Hasselt's cityscape, housing the boutique Helsen Ladies on the ground floor since 1994. This blend of historical architecture and modern commerce makes it a significant landmark in the city.
