The rear facade was replaced with timber framing, and the walls were thinned to create additional usable space. Further changes came in 1815, driven by plans to add schoolrooms and another floor. However, these ambitious plans were curtailed due to the inability of the foundation to support additional weight, leaving the building with a modern classical aesthetic.

The Neo-Renaissance and Beyond

In the late 19th century, the building saw a Neo-Renaissance makeover under the direction of Wilhelm Friedrich Laur. In 1885, a second, or fifth, floor was added, along with an ornate stone facade and a slate roof, giving the Rathaus a playful yet sophisticated appearance. This transformation was part of a broader trend during the Gründerzeit, a period of rapid industrial expansion and architectural innovation in Germany.

However, the tumultuous years of the Nazi regime brought further changes. Architect Paul Schmitthenner stripped away the Neo-Renaissance facade and added air raid shelters, which unfortunately damaged the building's foundation. These structural issues were not addressed until after World War II, leading to the decision to demolish the building in 1955.

A New Beginning: The Modern Rathaus

The current Rathaus, completed in 1958, is the work of Paul Schmitthenner, who also oversaw the demolition of the previous structure. This new building, standing proudly in the classical style, was inaugurated with a grand ceremony attended by local dignitaries, including the Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Viktor Renner. The design reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, fitting seamlessly into the historic fabric of Hechingen's Altstadt.

Today, the Rathaus is not only a center of local government but also a protected historical monument. In 1998, a fountain was added to the forecourt, echoing the town's long-standing tradition of public water features and enhancing the building's aesthetic appeal.
