The History of Bavokerk

The Bavokerk was constructed between 1878 and 1879, replacing an older, deteriorating church that could no longer serve the growing community. The late 19th century saw a surge in prosperity in Heemstede, largely due to the burgeoning flower bulb industry. This economic boom not only increased the population but also the number of faithful parishioners. The church's construction was partially funded by the sale of flower bulbs, a testament to the community's dedication and resourcefulness.

Designed by Evert Margry, a prominent pupil of the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, the Bavokerk is a masterpiece of neo-Gothic design. Margry's vision materialized in a three-aisled cruciform church, with a traditional west-facing tower and an eastward choir. The use of red brick gives the structure a warm, inviting appearance, while the architectural details reflect the grandeur of the era.

A Journey Through Time

The Bavokerk's history is not without its trials. On November 14, 1944, during the tumultuous days of World War II, a German V1 rocket crashed near the church. The subsequent explosion caused significant damage, shattering the stained-glass windows on the eastern and southern sides, collapsing the southern aisle, and dislodging the church's roof.

In the aftermath of the war, the community rallied to restore the Bavokerk to its former glory. By 1949, new stained-glass windows, crafted by the esteemed glazier Han Bijvoet, adorned the church once more. These vibrant windows tell stories of faith and resilience, capturing the spirit of the congregation.

The Bells and Their Tales

In 1948, three new bronze bells were introduced to the Bavokerk, replacing those lost during the war. Named Bavo, Maria, and Chrispijn, these bells symbolize Prosperity, Unity, and Labor, respectively. An inscription on the Chrispijn bell translates from Latin as: He who shoots with God's bells, wins not the war, a poignant reminder of peace and hope.

Exploring the Bavokerk

Visitors to the Bavokerk are greeted by its majestic facade, where a new statue of Saint Bavo, crafted in 2000 for the church's 120th anniversary, stands proudly above the main entrance. Inside, the church's interior is a harmonious blend of history and artistry. The 1833 Van den Brink organ, a national monument, was meticulously restored in 1972, revealing its original stone-red color and relocating it to a prominent position at the front of the church.

The Bavokerk is adorned with exquisite stained-glass windows throughout. In 1950, a window depicting Saint Bavo was installed at the right side entrance, while a Saint Anthony window graces the left. The Maria and Joseph chapels, embellished with stained-glass windows in 1951, feature scenes of the Holy Joachim and Anna, and Joseph of Egypt alongside Saint Benedict Joseph Labre.

A Place of Reflection

In 2008, the Bavokerk's old baptismal chapel underwent a transformation, becoming a serene space open to the public for moments of contemplation and prayer. Volunteers lovingly restored the chapel's interior, ensuring the preservation of its original colors and inviting visitors to find solace within its walls.
