The History of Wistariahurst

The story of Wistariahurst begins with William Skinner, a successful silk manufacturer whose business acumen and vision led to the creation of this magnificent estate. Originally built in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, the mansion was designed by Northampton architect William Ferro Pratt. However, following a devastating flood that swept away the original Skinner mills, the mansion was meticulously moved to its current location in Holyoke in 1874. The name Wistariahurst is derived from the abundant wisteria vines that cascade gracefully across its eastern facade, a feature that continues to enchant visitors to this day.

Wistariahurst occupies an entire city block, bounded by Cabot, Beech, Pine, and Hampshire Streets. The estate is surrounded by a low stone retaining wall topped with iron fencing, with entrances on the Beech Street side providing vehicular access to the carriage house and main drive. The main walkway entrance on Cabot Street is flanked by majestic marble lions, welcoming visitors to explore the rich history within.

Exploring the Mansion

The mansion itself is a three-story wood-frame structure, featuring a mansard roof and a series of additions and alterations made over the years. Although these elements were removed by the late 1960s, the building has been restored to its original architectural style, thanks to generous refurbishments provided by the United Bank Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the city. Today, the carriage house serves as an archival research center, housing Wistariahurst's various collections in a climate-controlled environment.

The museum's origins can be traced back to the Holyoke Museum of Natural History, later known as the Holyoke Museum of Fine Arts and Natural History.
