The Catholic community in Horgen had to wait until the Tolerance Edict of 1807 to celebrate Catholic masses again, initially limited to Zurich. The Industrial Revolution brought a wave of Catholic workers to Horgen, creating a pressing need for a local Catholic church.
By the mid-19th century, the Catholic community in Horgen had grown significantly, prompting the establishment of a mission station by Father Johann Joseph Röllin in 1865. The first Catholic mass in Horgen since the Reformation was celebrated in a hall at Bürgli, marking the beginning of a new chapter for local Catholics.
In 1868, the Association for the Maintenance of the Catholic Mission Station Horgen was founded, later renamed the Church Building Association in 1904. The quest for a dedicated Catholic church was on, and by 1870, the first meeting of the building committee for St. Josef Church took place. Renowned architect Anton Higi from Zurich was tasked with designing the new St. Josef Church. Construction began in 1933, and the new church was consecrated on June 24, 1934, by the Bishop of Chur, Laurenz Matthias Vincenz.
The new church, a striking concrete structure, features a 32-meter-high tower with a 6.5-meter cross, making it a prominent landmark visible from afar. The design elements, inspired by Bauhaus aesthetics, give the church a modern yet timeless appeal. In 1978, the church underwent significant renovations, including artistic enhancements by Peter Travaglini, who created a new altar area.
