The building was designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a disciple of the renowned Antoni Gaudí. However, the construction faced interruptions during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), delaying its completion until 1941. The asylum was finally inaugurated by Mossèn Amadeu Amenós i Roca.

In 1943, the Castells sisters' representatives initiated efforts to transform the architectural ensemble into a residence for the elderly. Today, Asil del Sant Crist is managed by the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly, continuing its mission of care and compassion.

Architectural Marvel

The Asil del Sant Crist is an architectural marvel, featuring a blend of styles that include Romanesque, Gothic, Arabic, and quintessentially Modernist elements. The building is primarily constructed from stone, sourced from the Pla del Magre in Jorba by stonemason Josep Saumell i Soler. This dome rests on a polygonal drum with a false dome ceiling, created using a traditional rural technique of progressively overlapping courses. The entire structure is supported by parabolic arches, which in turn rest on four single-piece stone columns from Girona. The overall design emphasizes an upward movement, in harmony with the exterior walls and façade of the building.

One of the columns to the right of the altar bears the signature of the architect, inscribed in Modernist characters. The church's stained glass windows depict saints associated with the names of the architect, the Castells sisters, and their heirs, adding a personal touch to the sacred space.

The Cloister

The cloister of Asil del Sant Crist, though modest in size, is a symbolic element that evokes traditional Catalan monastic architecture. It connects the central sections of the building's two wings and is designed more for its symbolic value than functional use.
