Essl Collection

Essl Collection Klosterneuburg

Essl Collection

The Essl Collection, known locally as Sammlung Essl, was a beacon of contemporary art nestled in the charming town of Klosterneuburg, Austria. Founded by the visionary Austrian entrepreneur Karlheinz Essl and his wife Agnes, this private collection once stood as a testament to modern artistic expression and innovation. Though the physical museum closed its doors in 2016, the legacy of the Essl Collection continues to inspire art lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.

The Birth of a Cultural Gem

The Essl Collection was inaugurated on November 5, 1999, in a purpose-built museum designed to showcase the vast array of contemporary artworks amassed by the Essls. Situated just outside Vienna, the museum quickly became a cultural landmark, attracting visitors from around the world. The collection boasted nearly 7,000 works, making it one of Austria's largest private art collections, with a particular focus on Austrian art post-1945.

Artists such as Arnulf Rainer, Maria Lassnig, and Hermann Nitsch were prominently featured, alongside international figures like Sam Francis and Antoni Tàpies. The collection was not limited to paintings and sculptures; it also included photography, video, and installations by artists like Cindy Sherman and Nam June Paik, offering a comprehensive view of contemporary art's diverse forms and expressions.

A Hub of Artistic Activity

The Essl Collection was more than just a repository of art; it was a vibrant hub of artistic activity. The museum regularly hosted exhibitions, concerts, and sound installations curated by Karlheinz Essl Jr., the son of the founders and a composer himself. These events created a dynamic atmosphere where art and music intersected, enhancing the visitor experience.

In 2005, the museum initiated the Essl Art Award CEE, a biennial competition recognizing emerging artists from Central and Eastern Europe. This award not only highlighted the Essls' commitment to nurturing new talent but also cemented the museum's role as a key player in the international art scene. Many past awardees, such as Katharina Sedá and Jakub Nepras, have since gained international acclaim.

Challenges and Changes

Despite its cultural significance, the Essl Collection faced financial challenges. In 2014, Karlheinz Essl offered the collection to the Austrian government for purchase, aiming to support his struggling home improvement chain, bauMax. Although the sale did not materialize, a portion of the collection was auctioned in London to raise funds.

In a significant turn of events, industrialist Hans Peter Haselsteiner acquired the majority of the collection in 2014, ensuring its preservation. Despite these efforts, the museum closed in 2016 due to financial constraints, though the building remains as a depot for the artworks.

A New Chapter at the Albertina

In 2017, a new chapter began for the Essl Collection as it became a long-term loan to the Albertina in Vienna. This partnership allowed the collection to reach new audiences, with the Albertina modern showcasing these works in various exhibitions. The Essl family's generous donation of over 1,300 pieces further enriched the Albertina's offerings, ensuring the collection's legacy continues to thrive.

Visitors to the Albertina can now enjoy the Essl Collection's diverse range of artworks, experiencing the evolution of contemporary art from the late 20th century to the present day. The collection's integration into the Albertina's programming highlights its ongoing relevance and impact on the art world.

Legacy and Inspiration

Though the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg no longer operates, its spirit lives on through the artworks that continue to inspire and provoke thought. The Essl Collection remains a vital part of Austria's cultural heritage, a testament to the passion and dedication of Karlheinz and Agnes Essl.

For art enthusiasts visiting Vienna, exploring the Essl Collection at the Albertina offers a unique opportunity to engage with some of the most compelling works of contemporary art. Whether you're a seasoned art aficionado or a curious newcomer, the collection promises a rich and rewarding experience that celebrates the power of creativity and innovation.
