Its walls, up to 14 meters thick, were designed to withstand sieges. The Hennebergsche Futtermauer, named after its builder, Prince-Bishop Philipp von Henneberg, is a notable feature of this ring.

Within this ring, the Salzturm and the Provianthaus served as storage for salt and provisions, essential during times of siege. The small courtyard known as the Geschützhof, or Riding School, was used for exercising horses when leaving the fortress was impossible.

The Outer Bastion Ring

The outermost ring of Rosenberg Fortress consists of five baroque bastions, constructed in the 17th century. These bastions form a regular pentagon, an ideal shape for small fortresses, and are named St. Kunigunde, St. Valentin, St. Lothar, St. Philipp, and St. Heinrich. Each bastion features large sculptural coats of arms, showcasing the Prince-Bishops as their builders.
