Interestingly, the original plans included a bishop's house designed in neo-Renaissance style, which was later repurposed as a hospital. The church has since become the central hub of the Titus Brandsma Parish, which also encompasses the Saint Dominic church.

The overall length of the basilica is an impressive 75 meters, with the transept spanning 32 meters in width. A Brush with History: The 1947 Plane Incident

On December 27, 1947, a Douglas DC-3 aircraft of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, while attempting to land at Leeuwarden Airport amidst heavy rain and low clouds, collided with the church’s 70-meter-high tower. The left wing of the aircraft was severely damaged, but the skilled pilots managed to perform an emergency landing in a field near Boxum, about 6 kilometers southwest of the church. Miraculously, all 15 people on board survived the incident.
