The story of Saint Anthony the Great Church begins in the 14th century when a modest wooden chapel stood on the site amidst a communal cemetery. The project was led by master mason Georg Leypold, who laid the foundation stone on September 24, 1579.
Despite challenges, including the Thirty Years' War and natural disasters like lightning strikes, the church has been resilient. Its journey through time saw expansions and renovations, notably in 1733 when Count Philip Joseph of Gallas commissioned Johann Felgenhauer to extend the church. This expansion added a transept and renewed the tower, altars, and pulpit, completed in 1735.

In 1879, the original tower was replaced with a taller, more elegant structure designed by Viennese architect Ludwig Tischler, reaching a height of 70.5 meters.
