The History of Millesgården

Over the years, the estate underwent several expansions and renovations, with Carl Milles' half-brother, architect Evert Milles, playing a significant role in its development.

The original entrance to Millesgården features a magnificent marble portal from the famed Hotel Rydberg, which was demolished in 1914. As the Milles' passion for art grew, so did their estate. In the 1920s, they acquired additional land and transformed it into a grand sculpture garden. The middle terrace was expanded, and a new sculpture studio, known as the Little Studio, was built. In 1936, Millesgården was converted into a foundation and gifted to the Swedish people, ensuring that Carl and Olga’s artistic legacy would be preserved for generations to come.

Discovering the Sculpture Park

The heart of Millesgården is undoubtedly its breathtaking sculpture park, which came into its own after Carl Milles returned from the United States in 1950. The park is adorned with monumental replicas of freestanding sculptures and fountain groups, showcasing Milles' artistic prowess. One of the most recent additions to Millesgården is the art gallery, inaugurated in October 1999. Designed by architect Johan Celsing, the gallery is a modern marvel that seamlessly blends with the historic surroundings. The building is adorned with a row of columns with gold-colored capitals in the Ionic order, originating from the 17th-century palace Makalös. The gallery’s architecture was honored with the Kasper Salin Prize in 1999.

The Forest Chapel

The design is based on Moritz von Schwind’s painting Die Waldkapelle from the mid-19th century.
