Perched on a small hillock in the picturesque town of Massa, Tuscany, the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte, also known officially as the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a captivating destination for those interested in history, architecture, and spirituality. This charming church, dating back to the late 16th century, is one of the oldest in Massa and holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors alike.
The roots of the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte can be traced back to a simple votive chapel or maestà dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Child. This small sacred space, built near a bridge over the Grondini canal, was not originally consecrated, as it lacked an altar and the necessary liturgical furnishings. However, the image of the Madonna housed within the chapel began to be associated with miraculous events, drawing increasing numbers of the faithful.
In 1588, Giovanni Giudici, a jurist and notary, petitioned the Bishop of Sarzana to allow Mass to be celebrated at the chapel. Although initially unsuccessful, Giudici’s persistence, coupled with the support of Prince Alberico I Cybo Malaspina, eventually led to the construction of a more substantial church. The Prince, who had been transforming Massa from a medieval village into a modern principality, saw the value in erecting new religious structures and supported the project wholeheartedly.
The construction of the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte began in earnest on March 19, 1589, with the laying of the first stone. The site chosen was at the end of the Stradone della porta Toscana, now known as Porta Martana. The initial funding for the church came from a debt owed to the city of Massa by Cato Alberti, the contractor responsible for the new city walls.
The church was designed in a simple yet elegant style, characterized by its striking red façade adorned with white pilasters and a triangular pediment. Statues of saints grace the exterior, adding to its serene and reverent ambiance. The church’s bell tower, with its distinctive shape, stands as a beacon of faith against the backdrop of lush green hills.
The Augustinian Fathers played a significant role in the history of the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte. Their involvement began in 1552 when Father Andrea Securani of Fivizzano requested permission from Prince Alberico to build a church and monastery within the city walls. Although the initial project was abandoned, the Augustinians were eventually invited to oversee the new church and monastery at the Madonna del Monte site.
The Augustinians expanded and beautified the church in three significant phases: in 1595, 1686, and 1715. Their contributions included the addition of a sacristy and the construction of a monastery, which later became the city hospital dedicated to Saints James and Christopher.
The Chiesa della Madonna del Monte was officially consecrated on May 11, 1599, by the Bishop of Luni-Sarzana, Giovanni Battista Salvago. This event marked the culmination of years of dedication and effort by the local community and the Augustinian Fathers.
Despite the church’s importance, the Augustinians were expelled from Massa in 1770 due to administrative abuses. The church then became a parish under the supervision of the diocese, and the adjacent monastery was transformed into a civil hospital in 1822.
One of the most notable features of the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte is the fresco of the Madonna in Majesty, which dates back to the 14th or 15th century. Originally located in the ancient chapel, this beautiful fresco now resides behind the main altar, continuing to inspire devotion among the faithful.
Inside the church, visitors can also admire various other artworks, including an epigraph commemorating the church’s consecration and a fresco depicting the Ecstasy of St. Augustine. These pieces offer a glimpse into the rich artistic and religious heritage of the region.
Today, the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte remains a place of peace and reflection, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the serenity of this historic sanctuary. Whether you are drawn by its architectural beauty, its storied past, or its spiritual significance, this charming church is a must-visit destination in Massa.
As you explore the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte, take a moment to appreciate the dedication and faith of those who built and preserved this sacred space. Their legacy lives on in the church’s walls, offering a timeless reminder of the enduring power of faith and community.
