Casa Casuarina

Casa Casuarina Miami Beach

Casa Casuarina

Nestled in the heart of Miami Beach on the iconic Ocean Drive, Casa Casuarina, also widely known as the Versace Mansion, stands as a beacon of opulence and historical intrigue. This stunning property, originally constructed in 1930, has become a symbol of luxury and a must-see destination for visitors to Miami. With its rich history, architectural splendor, and transformation into a luxury hotel, Casa Casuarina offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking a taste of grandeur and elegance.

The Origins of Casa Casuarina

The story of Casa Casuarina begins with Alden Freeman, the son of Joel Freeman, treasurer of the Standard Oil Company. In 1930, Alden Freeman commissioned the construction of this neo-Mediterranean mansion, inspired by the Alcazar de Colon in Santo Domingo, a colonial-era residence. The mansion's name, Casa Casuarina, translates to house of the Australian pine, a reference to either a novel by William Somerset Maugham or an actual tree that survived the devastating hurricane of 1926.

The mansion boasts unique features, including an observatory, a small replica of the Ozama Fortress tower from the Dominican Republic, and approximately 100 medallions of historical figures such as Lenin, Mussolini, and Julius Caesar adorning its walls. The interior was designed by Addison Mizner, adding to the mansion's allure.

The Amsterdam Palace Era

After Freeman's passing in 1937, the mansion changed hands and was purchased by Jacques Amsterdam for $100,000. Amsterdam transformed the property into a 24-apartment complex known as The Amsterdam Palace. Over the years, the mansion underwent several ownership changes and was later renamed the Christopher Columbus Apartments, a nod to its architectural ties to the era of Christopher Columbus.

Gianni Versace's Vision

In 1992, the mansion found a new owner in the renowned Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. Versace purchased the property for $2.95 million and embarked on an ambitious renovation project. He transformed the 24 apartments into a luxurious 8-bedroom residence, complete with 2 kitchens, 3 living rooms, 10 bathrooms, a bar, a library, and 4 sitting rooms. Central air conditioning was also installed to ensure comfort in the Miami heat.

Versace's vision extended beyond the mansion itself. In 1993, he acquired the adjacent Revere Hotel for $3.7 million, which he subsequently demolished to create a stunning pool and garden area. The landscape and art historian Roy Strong, who had previously worked on Versace's Villa Fontanelle in Lake Como, played a significant role in designing the modifications to the property.

Tragically, Gianni Versace's life was cut short in 1997 when he was fatally shot by serial killer Andrew Cunanan at the entrance of Casa Casuarina. Despite this tragic event, Versace's legacy lives on through the grandeur he brought to the mansion.

The Transformation into The Villa, Casa Casuarina

In 2000, the mansion was acquired by Peter Loftin for $19 million. Loftin undertook extensive renovations to convert the property into a luxury hotel, complete with boutiques, a restaurant, and event spaces. The restaurant, originally named Il Sole at The Villa Casa Casuarina, was later rebranded as Gianni's in honor of the mansion's most famous owner.

In 2013, VM South Beach, LLC purchased the property for $41.5 million. Since 2015, The Villa, Casa Casuarina has operated as a luxury hotel, offering 10 opulent suites that allow guests to immerse themselves in the mansion's rich history and lavish surroundings.
