It wasn't until 1885 that the location for the monument was confirmed, right in the center of Place Garibaldi, a square that had borne his name since 1870.

The renowned sculptor Antoine Étex was commissioned to create the monument. Unfortunately, Étex passed away in 1888, leaving the work unfinished. Gustave Deloye stepped in to complete the task, significantly enhancing the original design by enlarging the pedestal and adding two majestic bronze lions. The monument was finally inaugurated on October 4, 1891, and for many years, the Société des garibaldiens de Nice laid a wreath there every June 2nd, the anniversary of Garibaldi's death.
