Norfolk Scope

Norfolk Scope Norfolk

Norfolk Scope

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk Scope is a marvel of modern architecture and a hub of cultural and sporting activities. This multi-functional complex boasts an impressive 11,000-seat arena, a 2,500-seat theater known as Chrysler Hall, a versatile 65,000-square-foot exhibition hall, and a convenient 600-car parking garage. The Norfolk Scope is not just a venue; it is a testament to innovative design and a beacon of community spirit.

The Architectural Wonder

Designed by the renowned Italian architect and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, in collaboration with the local firm Williams and Tazewell, the Norfolk Scope stands as a symbol of architectural brilliance. Nervi's design, inspired by his earlier works for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, features the world's largest reinforced thinshell concrete dome. This dome, measuring 440 feet in diameter and 110 feet in height, is supported by 24 striking flying buttresses, creating a visually stunning and structurally sound masterpiece.

A Historical Journey

The construction of the Norfolk Scope began in June 1968 and was completed in 1971 at a cost of $35 million, with federal funds covering $23 million of the expense. When it officially opened on November 12, 1971, it was the second-largest public complex in Virginia, second only to the Pentagon. The name Scope is a contraction of kaleidoscope, reflecting the venue's versatility and dynamic nature. The facility's logo, a colorful abstracted kaleidoscope image, was designed by Raymond Loewy's firm, Loewy/Snaith of New York.

A Cultural and Sporting Hub

The Norfolk Scope has played a pivotal role in the cultural and sporting life of Norfolk. It has hosted a wide range of events, from concerts and theatrical performances to sporting events and exhibitions. The adjacent Chrysler Hall, home to the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, adds a touch of musical elegance to the complex. The arena's seating can be reconfigured to accommodate from 10,253 for sporting events up to 13,800 for concerts, making it a versatile venue for various events.

Memorable Moments

Over the years, the Norfolk Scope has been the stage for numerous memorable moments. During preparations for the first hosting of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a bear escaped its cage and ran across the wet paint on the floor of the unfinished Exhibition Hall below. Visitors to the Hampton Roads Automobile Show could later spot bear tracks in the painted floor between the exhibitions. The arena has also hosted major wrestling events, including the National Wrestling Alliance, Jim Crockett Promotions, World Championship Wrestling, and World Wrestling Entertainment shows, with the biggest being Starrcade '88 in December 1988.

Renovations and Future Plans

Since 2003, the Norfolk Scope has undergone $11 million worth of renovations to enhance the visitor experience. These improvements include the replacement of the center-hung scoreboard with LED video and matrix boards and the installation of two LED end-zone videoboards in 2008. A new glass wall has been installed, and plans are underway to extend it further to expand the arena's main concourse, adding additional restrooms and concession stands. Discussions have also taken place about expanding the arena by adding 5,000 seats and 24 luxury suites to remain competitive with neighboring venues in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states.

A Bright Future

In 2018, the city decided to move on from the renovation concept, which would total $200 million, and began exploring the possibility of building a new arena at an undisclosed location. In his 2019 State of the City address, Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander announced plans to study this possibility further. As of March 2024, the city once again considered renovating the Scope and potentially adding more seats, ensuring that this iconic venue continues to serve the community for years to come.

An Unmissable Destination

Whether you're a sports enthusiast, a music lover, or a history buff, the Norfolk Scope offers something for everyone. Its unique design, rich history, and diverse range of events make it an unmissable destination in Norfolk. As you explore this architectural wonder, you'll be captivated by its grandeur and the vibrant energy that fills its halls. The Norfolk Scope is more than just a venue; it's a cornerstone of Norfolk's cultural and sporting landscape, a place where memories are made, and history is written.
