Parc Central de Nou Barris, known locally as Parque Central de Nou Barris, is one of the largest and most enchanting green spaces in Barcelona, Spain. Spanning an impressive 17.7 hectares, this urban oasis offers a delightful blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.
The park’s journey began in 1997, with its first phase of construction culminating in 1999, covering an area of 77,986 square meters. The park continued to grow with a second phase from 2000 to 2003, adding another 88,652 square meters. Finally, in 2007, the third phase was completed, bringing the park to its current expansive size. Designed by the talented architects Carme Fiol and Andreu Arriola, Parc Central de Nou Barris has been recognized for its architectural excellence, winning the International Urban Landscape Award in 2007 in Frankfurt, Germany.
One of the park’s most intriguing features is its connection to the past. Within the boundaries of the first phase lies a part of the old Manicomio de la Santa Cruz, an asylum inaugurated in 1889. Designed by architect Josep Oriol Bernadet, the asylum was built following the directives of Dr. Emili Pi i Molist and had a capacity for 600 patients. Today, this historic building has been repurposed to house the Popular Library of Nou Barris, the Municipal Council of the Nou Barris District, the Municipal Archive, and a police station.
Adjacent to this historic site is the Fòrum Nord de la Tecnologia, a modern building completed in 1995. This structure is partially surrounded by a serene lake and is home to various technology companies, an underground parking facility, a bar-restaurant, classrooms for Barcelona Activa, and the Cibernarium.
The second phase of the park introduced a vast green area, complete with two picturesque lakes separated by Fabra and Puig promenade. This section boasts an impressive collection of 1,562 trees and over 500 shrubs, representing more than 30 different species. Visitors can admire poplars, acacias, magnolias, olive trees, cypresses, carob trees, holm oaks, pines, and palm trees. A particularly notable feature is a triangular space near Karl Marx Square, spanning 4,500 square meters and adorned with 130 palm trees of various species.
Parc Central de Nou Barris is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a model of sustainability. The park includes a retention and regulation reservoir for rainwater, designed to protect the sewer network and prevent flooding in the area. Located between Paseo Urrutia and Villalba dels Arcs Street, this reservoir has a capacity of 18,000 cubic meters and a depth of 5.3 meters, showcasing the park’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
As you wander through the park, you’ll encounter two charming farmhouses, Can Carreras and Can Ensenya. The renovation of Can Carreras was funded by the €50,000 prize money from the International Urban Landscape Award. Another highlight is the ancient aqueduct known as Dos Rius, which now gracefully spans a lake. In the past, this aqueduct crossed the Can Carreras stream and connected Nou Barris with the Horta-Guinardó district.
Parc Central de Nou Barris is a vibrant hub of activity and relaxation. Its vast open spaces and diverse flora provide the perfect setting for leisurely strolls, picnics, and outdoor activities. The park’s well-maintained pathways are ideal for jogging, cycling, and walking, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Throughout the year, the park hosts various cultural and recreational events, drawing people of all ages to enjoy its scenic beauty and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to unwind with a book under the shade of a tree, enjoy a family outing, or simply soak in the natural surroundings, Parc Central de Nou Barris offers something for everyone.
Parc Central de Nou Barris is more than just a park; it’s a testament to the harmonious blend of history, architecture, and nature. Its sprawling green spaces, historical landmarks, and modern amenities make it a true gem in the heart of Barcelona. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil retreat, this park promises an unforgettable experience.
