The story of Sacred Heart Church is deeply intertwined with the history of Oberhausen itself. Before Oberhausen was officially established in 1862, the area was part of the municipalities of Lirich and Lippern under the jurisdiction of Borbeck. The rapid industrial growth in the region necessitated the creation of new ecclesiastical structures to cater to the burgeoning Catholic population. Initially, the northern part of Oberhausen was served by St. Marienkirche, while the southern part fell under the parish of St. Mariae Geburt in Mülheim.
By 1888, the need for a dedicated church in the northern district became apparent, leading to the formation of the construction association at Altmarkt. Their efforts culminated in the establishment of a provisional church, which was consecrated on October 3, 1889. This makeshift place of worship quickly gained significance, and in 1892, despite opposition, it was elevated to the status of a parish by Archbishop Philipp Krementz of Cologne.
Under the leadership of its first pastor, August Hortmanns, the Sacred Heart Parish flourished. By 1900, the parish had grown to encompass 12,600 Catholics, prompting plans for a more permanent structure. Construction of the new church began in 1909, designed in the neo-Gothic style by architect Hermann Wielers from Bochum. The church was completed and consecrated on April 30, 1911, with further consecration ceremonies held on July 16, 1912, by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Müller.
The parish continued to grow, leading to the establishment of new parishes such as St. Johannes Evangelist in 1906 and St. Peter in 1920. The Sacred Heart Church thus became a central hub for the Catholic community in Oberhausen.
The Sacred Heart Church, like much of Europe, faced significant challenges during World War II. In 1942 and 1943, the church sustained damage from several bombings. The most devastating attack occurred on the night of Easter Tuesday in 1943, when the church was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombings. The once grand structure was reduced to ruins, with only parts of the tower and some masonry surviving.
Despite these hardships, the resilient community began the arduous task of rebuilding. By March 1948, reconstruction efforts were underway, supported by a new construction association that gathered donations and organized volunteer efforts. The church was partially reopened by the end of 1948, with further restorations continuing into the early 1950s. The tower, which had suffered severe damage, was rebuilt with a new design featuring a flat roof and a copper rooster, symbolizing vigilance and readiness.
In the post-war years, Sacred Heart Church saw numerous renovations and improvements. The interior was enhanced with Jura marble, and a new altar, pulpit, and communion benches were installed by 1957. The church also received new stained glass windows in the choir, completed between 1959 and 1962. In 1985, the church was officially designated a historical monument, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
One of the most significant modern additions was a new organ, installed in 1990 by the Georges Heintz organ workshop. This instrument, with its intricately designed façade by sculptor Carsten Lewerentz, added a new dimension to the church’s musical heritage.
Today, Sacred Heart Church stands not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Oberhausen community. The church's vibrant parish life continues, with Sacred Heart Church serving as the central parish for the newly formed Herz Jesu Oberhausen-Mitte, which includes the former parishes of St. Joseph Styrum and St. Peter Alstaden.
